axle questions!

well, as it turns out, i have a bent rear axle... gonna have to replace it...

i've never pulled an axle before, so is there anything in particular i should know before i get in there? there's just a seal, bearing, and the axle itself, right?

do i have to mess with the differential at all?

off to search for parts and stuff... later!

and thanks, too...

Re: axle questions!

If it is just a 1/2 ton 12 bolt you take the drum off, take the diffy cover off, take out the 5/16 thread bolt (1/2 head IIRC) on the spider gears, pull out the big pin that goes through the middle there, push the offending axle inward, remove the c clip, and pull the axle out.

WORD OF CAUTION: do not move the spider gears while the big pin is out!!!

Replace that $3 oil seal while you have it apart.

Re: axle questions!

okay... that sounds easy enough, except that it's a 10 bolt... also 6 lugs... what about gear oil? any particular kind? how much? and about how long should the whole process take?

Re: axle questions!

that sounds sweet. When someone posted about te barn door set up i started to draw a scketch in my head (still need to draw on paper). A tail gate that does barn doors and the traditonal design. (yes i know sounds a little dumb but id be the ony guy with one and it would be fun to do)

Re: axle questions!

I had replaced my rear end from one from a junk yard and it happened to have bad bearings. I also have never worked on a rear end and so far it's been pretty easy.(practiced on the old one first) The only problem I have had so far is trying to find someone to press out the bearings. One of the draw backs of living in a small town. If you need any parts shot me a PM

Re: axle questions!

thanks for the offer, but i actually finished the job a few hours ago and everything is fine now! i have one other problem now... i have a bent rim up front, but it's not nearly as bad as the rear was... i just need to replace that rim and all will be well... it's a stock rim, 6 lugs, 15" if anybody can help me out...

the stupid thing makes a very annoying sound and rubs a little bit... a little shake, too... i don't really think i should drive it too much till it's replaced... I NEED A RIM!

thanks again
