Guys with a Tach- question

Hey Folks,

I don't have a tach on my truck and was curious: I'm running a 1971 350 with a TH 400 transmission and 3.73 rear. Could you tell me what the shift points are puttin' around town and what the shift points are when you wick-it up?

The reason I ask- my MSD HEI module went out last week. I ordered another one. Right now I'm running the factory-stock GM HEI. It occurs to me that I probably don't even get any benefit from the MSD because I probably never get into the upper RPM ranges... Of course I stick my foot in it every once in awhile just to remind myself I'm not in my Jeep Cherokee- but for the most part I'm just loping it around town.

I'm a little snake bit in regards to the MSD module. It's been flakey since I've owned the truck (About 4 months). Sometimes it would just fail to pass spark to the coil. Wait awhile- then it would start. It left me walking last week. I have to say, the GM module just looks better-built. The MSD I took off has all the electronics exposed- covered in lucite or some material.

Thanks

Re: Guys with a Tach- question

They MSD moduel starts really helping any where after 4500 rpm. so there is no need for it most of the time on a driver but I run them all the time just because I have not grown up yet and I turn my engines up.

Moduels can some time go intermitently like you described.

Also I'm not sure what was on your MSD moduel but even when you put a new one in you must use diaelectric(?sp) compound on the under side of the moduel. GM or MSD

MSD does make an enclosed moduel that looks like the GM four pin design in case that is your worry. Hope this helps RJ22

Re: Guys with a Tach- question

Just curious...... did you run a new power wire to the HEI when it was installed, or did you connect the original wire to it that use to go to the coil?

Re: Guys with a Tach- question

I made sure to D/C the resistor wire and 2x check I was getting at least 12v to the coil.

After the module fried, I went ahead and replaced my engine harness with the MH harness for HEI. Everything looks much cleaner. Funny thing about the harness, however. Even though it's designed for HEI and a truck with gauges, it still had the yellow wire coming off the R terminal on the solenoid and an electric oil sender boot. Snip-snip.

Thanks for your input
