How do I ID options
I just bought a 1971 4x4 pickup. Someone already took the glove box door with the option codes on it. Now how do i know what it is?

Re: How do I ID options
Without the glove box door you will not be able to get the specific options.

Re: How do I ID options
You can get the basic info from the VIN as shown here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/Chevyear.html

So I could restore it into a loaded super, and nobody would know?

Re: How do I ID options
You could do that with any of these trucks. There are NOS glove box labels for sale, and there is at least one board member that is great at reproducing the font.

Re: How do I ID options
I don't mean to cheat anybody, but I would like to restore the equipment it had.Is the glovebox the only way to determine options?

Re: How do I ID options
you can just get the basics off the vin.
You may have had a PO put factory options on it that it didn't have, or remove them, so without that build sheet from the lid, no way of knowing..

Re: How do I ID options
WOW! I'm stunned. Thought Chevrolet kept better records. So if i getting this right, some of these high price rare loaded pickups very well could have started out as a plain jane six cylinder pickup. How do collectors fork out this kind of cash knowing it might be a clone?

Re: How do I ID options
You wouldn't really be "cheating" anybody - if the truck has them on, it has them on - unless someone is a real stickler for authenticity, and it's been put on the way the factory did it, imo it's as good as coming from the factory like that. I think most of the people that buy pickups feel the same way. My .02

Re: How do I ID options
before you give up---check behind the seat and/or under the carpet/floormat, i've found the factory build sheet in both places.

Re: How do I ID options
Look the truck over good and start by noting what options you know you have, (A/C, tinted glass, power steer, etc). Order the restoration packet from GM and you should be able to go through the listed options and determine pretty quickly what you have or don't have. Color, trim, engine and trans should be easy to figure out unless its all been changed. We can probably tell you many of the options if you show us some pics. A new label can be made to replace the original.
