What's a cheap way to do this? Thinking of doing it on my truck. I've got a spare set of springs on a parts truck if cutting/heating is what I go with and I don't like it. What's the best source for lowering springs? Just bouncing ideas around in my empty head.

Krue- the cheapest way is to cut a coil out of your spare springs (FREE) and buy a set of rear drop springs at GMCPauls for $95(Cheap)

You will not need to buy lowering shocks with this mild of a drop. Captain Keneival has my old cut springs on his truck now and they look great!

Yep. 3's in the front, Brothers $99 4-inchers in the rear. Before and after below

How low of a drop can you accomplish up front with cutting springs? I have all the parts for my 6'' drop in the rear but the front requires alot more.

I'm also trying to keep my project low buck, I'm going to cut one coil off the front which should give around 2" drop. On the rear I'm going to try a 3" square tube drop like the one pictured here that Iveldesigns posted a while back.

I was going to start this weekend on this, but the GMC decided to blow a head gasket this week, so my priorities have changed. I'll post pics when I get it done.

On Captain Knievals truck springs, I cut 1.25 coils out of each spring and got a hair less than 3" drop as you see in his pics. I wouldn't cut anymore than that.

Jim,

In another post discussing cutting front coils, there was mention of the front coils 'popping' when turning. What should be done to avoid that?

If they pop (moving in the spring pocket) it's probably due to being cut too short. I wouldn't go more than a 3" spring in front if you decide to cut. Another reason to not go too short, is they might fall out when jacking the truck up to put it on jack stands.

I thought you were only supposed to cut the springs an even amount of coils due to the way they fit in the cups.?

You can cut 1 ring out of the front coil and find some old big car springs to lower the rear. They won't take much of a load weight wise but they ride good and lower it to about what your looking for. I might even still have some

Krue, heres the cheapest way. Cut one coil from the front springs & find a buddy that has an old set of chevelle, elcamino, cutlass style rear springs for the back. Free...

I still plan on using my truck like a truck, so I've got to be able to carry a load. May just leave it stock height.

Well I still used mine as a truck some and it could get a little scary with a load in ruff road conditions. If your still gonna use it as a truck, my opinion is to either lower it the right way with the coponents from ECE or leave it stock. Just my .02

If, you plan on using you truck to tow and haul. Then, cheap should not be put into the equation. I am on the same boat and I plan on going 2" spindles in the front and a good set of 4" dropped coils from the rear. I am really thinking of Early Classics Enterprises for my parts.

Do it right... I accomplished my stance with 2.5" drop spindles and 4" drop coils in the rear. I'm really happy with the ride and stance, also you don't have to worry about any rubbing! My truck handles great and I regularly haul motorcycles, engines, snomobiles...etc. It does get a little squirly goin down the freeway with a bunch of weight in the rear... but that's only above 85 or so

That's a good looking truck.

Just checked out the ECE 2/4 lowering kit. Seems reasonable. Anything else one should figure on doing while they're installing the kit? For example, with a 2/4 drop, you wouldn't need the C notch, would you?

I don't want my comment taken the wrong way so please try to understand the point that I'm attempting to make here.

If I needed a work truck (a practical truck) I would leave my truck stock or buy a second truck for the above various needs. Where I live 3 grand buys a really nice dependable and pretty good looking truck in the 80's.

I'm not a fan of trying to make 2 trucks out of one. Hot Rod's, Kustoms and Street Rods are (IMO) to be enjoyed for what they are .... truck's that have earned their retirement.

Hey thanks for the props... No you don't need a C- Notch or anything. You just need some knock-er Loose for the rear retainer bolts and a BFH for the front ball joints... assuming that you're replacing them. Deffinitly get the front end aligned after you put the spindles on... I tore through a set of tire in a couple of weeks
