Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
Does anyone know if Chrome Budd wheels are still available? They were more popular in the drier states like SoCal,AZ,NV...I had some on a`70 C/30,sold it,the guy put them on a`71 wrecker, and now it`s mine.He didn`t keep them up and they finally started rusting. Not bad for around here, but I stayed after them. Not bad for wheels bought in`88.I had the Sr West Coast mirrors chromed and I knew he pulled them off the`70.They had a little rust on the heads(std replacement in ss available). He said he chucked them.He doesn`t like big mirrors(Ya like trucks or cars?).
Back to the Chromies...One is worse than the rest in the rear. The other three are presentable for an old unrestored wrecker, call it patina.I`d like a new set or just one rear.If anyone finds an old one around (front or rear) that has mostly good chrome,I`d like to buy it.I know once Alcoas came around in the`80s they took over. But,California had them all over the place. Please keep a look-out for them for me,please.I don`t want to go with Simulators.

Re: Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
Thanks,Chuck. You guys sure are lame when it comes to one ton stuff.(yeah, that`s a challenge). These things were all over trucks in the`70s &`80s in California when I was out there.I was about the only one to get them around here.I was about the first to run simulators, too. But,I want the true chrome wheels.Simulatores are to easy.Besides, the true chrome Budds look better and they are what TorqueThrusts are to 1/2tons and Aluminum Slots are to 3/4tons for a classic 1ton.

Re: Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
I'll keep an eye out when i go junyardin' next time, I know a guy up in Mason City that has a decent yard full of old trucks and cars, never seen any chrome budds there, but never looked real hard either. My neighbor has several old trucks parked in his woods too, maybe I'll go over there this afternoon and cut some wood and see what I can see.

Have you thought about taking them and having them re-chromed?

Last time I checked on getting wheels chromed around here the chrome shops wouldn`t do them.

Re: Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
I`m hoping to find just one used rear wheel.I`ll worry about getting all perfect when the truck`s restored.Right now I just want the one real bad one to look as good as the other three. The truck is just faded red with a solid body.I kinda like the "As Is" look.

Re: Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
I would imagine if you could find a shop to do a quallity job at plating them the price would be outragaous.
Did GM ever come out with a factory chrome budd wheel? I've seen a few thru the years and wasnt sure if they were after market or original GM?

Re: Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
Hi Tim,
Don't know about the chrome ones. I'd bet it would be a fortune to have them re-done. I'm useing Alcoas and from six feet a polished Alcoa looks like chrome. I'll wager you could buy two Alcoas for the price of one re-do.What if you bought them two at a time? What's your pattern and size? I agree with you, the simulaters are..........too easy. And they come off when you don't want them too!

Re: Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
I can almost read the tire size...The chromes never came on them from the factory. They weren`t hardly used around the east,if at all.A set of Alcoas was for sale here ($300) and I said I`d buy them.Never heard back on shipping.I still want them, but want to run the chrome wheels until I restore it.

Re: Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
Give this guy a call. I bet he might have some, don't know how nice though. I grew up around there and remember seeing the chromies on duallys in the 80's. He ends up with most of the junk in the area, so it's worth a shot.

Re: Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
Old thread, but let's try this again. Any of you new members since '07 ever see any 16" 8-lug chrome Budd wheels in your travels? Since things have changed and now a thread like this would belong in "Parts" as a WTB,I'd rather change the topic more towards general conversation on C/30s with chrome Budds.Any of you who are long time true truck fanatics I'm sure have/had noticed them before. s I said before i this thread, these wheels are to C/30s what Torque Thrusts are to C/10s and aluminum slots are to C/20s. They are the period correct dress-up. Here's my patina wrecker,a nice green flat bed,and another Orange Highlander w/factory flatbed I have my eye on:

Re: Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
K, I haven't seen these since Alcoas became popular. I ran Buds until late eightys and Alcoa since. The Alcoas allow more payload due to weight.

Re: Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
Thanks for the responses. I can find aluminum wheels all day long, but none of those existed anywhere near back to the time I'm doing my wrecker in. I want it to look like they did in their glory days, not like one someone took and did modern things to later. Alcoas allow for added payload,I guess, but the fact is that doesn't even matter. The steel Budds that came on these trucks...or the chrome version...can take anything you can throw at them. The proof is in the pudding. We're only talking about a 5 or so ton gross here

Are these really that hard to find and worth shipping from the west coast? Either way I'll keep my eyes open for them as this was the first I knew of your need.

Yes it is,Bill. It belongs to my friend Gene. It's a Highlander! That's his place. He wants one of my fronts and I want one of his rear wheels. I told him I'd sell it for $2,500 and he doesn't even have to remove it from the truck

Re: Chrome Budd Wheels/Please Help
I am like you special-K, it defies reason that these can be so hard to come by given how plentiful they were back in the day. When I was in HS and college I drove a 6.2L C-30 and had chrome wheels on it. When I got in college I had less time to maintain them and a couple of them got some rust... I just drove down to truck supply place and EXCHANGED them for a few bucks. Back then we would have DIED for a set of aluminum... now that's all you can get??? Wow. How times have changed. Good luck with your search.
