remove bed
Hello,
Any hints, tips or techniques for removing the bed on my '71 C-10. It is quite heavy due to the diamond plate floor. Thanks,

The method that works well for us is to set up two chain falls, one for each end of the bed, pick up the bed and drive or push the truck out from underneath the bed. Our barn trusses are high enough for this and they are reenforced to support the loads up to 1,000 lbs. each chainfall.
We have used 4-5 persons to manually lift them off, but with dianond plate you may want to go with (6). With people lifting, you have to be careful lifting and walking with the bed. Jim |

Lots of manpower is required to fully remove the box. I managed to move the box back a few feet with the help of a friend. Just so I could get at my cab corners. If you have a real sturdy overhead frame you could lift it straight up and then drive the truck out from under.

I removed mine by my self with an engine hoist. Raised it up, drove out from under it, put saw horses under it, let it down, drank a beer. Easy

Jack up the rear end.
Remove the rear wheels so it will clear. Put jack stands under there, after you have lowered it. Get some strong friends and lift it off. The hardest part is lifting it over the rear wheels. If they aren't there, it's not so bad. The guys on the cab side (front) might want to wear gloves. Those edges can hurt. |

I use an engine hoist and a 4x4.. Cut the 4x4 long enough to get under the bed rails in the center of the bed just in front of the center stake pockets. Wrap a chain arround the center of the 4x4 and hook the engine hoist up to it. Lift it off!!! Just like tom hand says... It is quick, easy and effective.....LOL WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com
