what engine to replace 216 in 1949 pickup

i am starting to restore a 1949 3100 pickup. i want to use it for daily use. i will keep the 216 for future use, in case i want to have it original. i don't know what engines are commonly used for replacements. for now i just want a engine more suitable for daily use at normal highway speeds. what would be a good choice for a good dependable engine that is not too much of a gas hog??

if you keep it straight 6 I'd go with a 235....they are everywhere.

Re: what engine to replace 216 in 1949 pickup

The straight 6 is ok if you update your rear gears and trans to a 5 speed. I wanted a little more get up and dropped a TPI 5.7(350) with a 700R4 and 10 bolt rear posi with 4 wheel disc to slow it down properly. If you just want a cruiser, keep it simple and affordble. Someone on here from Florida did a 235 with a T-5 and a 10 bolt. They even kept the original stick. Do some thinking and some research. Keep in mind what your budget is and your capabiities as a mechanic. Good luck and keep us posted. BTW Welcome to the board.

I will be putting a 261 inline 6 (bit harder to find than a 235) and a T-5 transmission in my 1950 3100. Just need to find a decent frame first.
Look at the forum and tech tips at http://www.stovebolt.com they have all the info you need on 235 and T-5 swaps.
