cummins turbo diesel in a 64 1 ton flatbed....
i am not a big fan of diesels in general but i like the cummins turbo diesels. if i can get the 64 1 ton i want im thinking of stickin one in it. i think that would be bad ass, cause i dont like gm's diesel engines. i know some of yall might be pooping a brick right now but the cummins engines are not really made by dodge and they have awsome power, i have alot of experience with them and theres nothing i dont like about them except its high dollar when something breaks. just wanted to ask and see if someone more experienced could tell me how much trouble it would be to do the swap. i know some of yall might not think it would be worth the trouble but i love the engines, they make good power, and then being able to tell people that your 64 chevy has a cummins turbo diesel would sure surprise people, and it sure would be fun to drive!!!!! lol if yall can give me some info or opinions i would appreciate it.
thanks, John

If you're planning on doing a frame off, and completely going over this truck, I think you should put what ever you want in it. Take your time and do it right from the beginning. I can tell you from experience, if you hurry you'll be disappointed in the end. If your confidence lies in the Cummings, it will be you best bet. All that being said, it would be very cool!

Re: cummins turbo diesel in a 64 1 ton flatbed....
no i havent got it yet but when i get back home im gonna do my best. he seemed willing to deal, i think he just wants it gone. im gonna offer $500 cause thats all i can get at the moment, that and i dont think its worth more than $500. im gonna have to look at the truck and check how much rust if any is there. if its ok then i wont do a frame off but that also depends on if the cummins will clear everywhere, i might have to pull the cab to do some modifications to fit the engine. i found a 2000 dodge with a cummins turbo diesel for $1000 that was rolled but i can hear it run, but it wont drive. its too ripped up to drive. i would want a 5-speed tranny for sure. anyways ill keep yall informed.

Re: cummins turbo diesel in a 64 1 ton flatbed....
I have a 1964 Chevy Cummins Flatbed. We put the Chevy cab on to the dodge chassis. It worked out very nice.
I am now doing a 1966 Chevy Cummins on a 1995 FORD F-450 10 lug straight axle chassis. The motor will be 972hp hooked to a FORD ZF 42 5spd trans. The motor I am building is posted in Diesel Power, Zero To Hero: Our 972hp, 27-mpg 1989 Dodge D250 - Diesel Power ... Like I tell my Dodge Diesel buddy's, I rip the problem off and throw it away...! |

Re: cummins turbo diesel in a 64 1 ton flatbed....
I know a guy that put a 65 longbed body on a mid 90's dodge frame with the cummin's and he pulls his 28 ft 5th wheel with it.. Very neat..

If your looking for motor mounts try talking http://www.autoworldmt.com/ There is a few on here who have put a cummins in the newer trucks but it shouldn't be that different.

I was actually eyeing a dodge dually frame and running gear thinking that it would be a great swap. I'd love to see what comes of this.
