1951 1.5 ton dump truck
Hi there. New guy here. I have been lurking in the shadows for awhile watching my brothers build thread and decided to get in on the fun myself. I picked up a 51 GMC 1.5T dump about a month ago. Well I spent all weekend cleaning and organizing the shop so that I could get it in. I am basicallyjust looking to get her road worthy and drive it around town. Should be a good conversation starter loading up with mulch in the spring. It has a 235 with a cracked head in it. I am new to this whole era of trucks so I am sure that I will have lots of questions for everyone. Here are some pics for you.

Re: 1951 1.5 ton dump truck
Welcome from Southern Arizona!!
That is a great start (all except the dump part) for a good looking hot rod, if that is what you are going to do with it!

Re: 1951 1.5 ton dump truck
cool project dude! is the head have the typical "external water jacket crack" or is the oil mixing with the coolant? post some pic's and the head may be fixable. the method of fixing them has really changed over the years 4 different ways in fact: brazing, block sealer, welding with cast rod and finally "space age epoxies. i have used all of those methods with success at different times and it really comes down to how bad is the crack? good luck

Re: 1951 1.5 ton dump truck
There seems to be some oil and water mix when you look at the dipstick. I will take a close up picture of the crack. I appreciate the advice. If it is fixable without a new head that would be great!!

Hello Brother...
Is the crack in the center of the pic running top to bottom?

Re: 1951 1.5 ton dump truck
If it were me i would swap a small block in just for relibalty sake and for making it easier to get parts. If you decide to go that rought I have a orignal trans frame mount and the bell that works on it. you are welcome to have them. I was going to scrap them but can't see it because they are hard to find items. i would like to see them put to good use. Oh they came out of my 1 1/5 ton ad 54 split window.

Re: 1951 1.5 ton dump truck
Isn't that crack in the waterjacket? If so, JB Weld would do.
I say keep the six, you can get parts, and it would be cool to have a running stock old truck.

Re: 1951 1.5 ton dump truck
Yes I think it is in the water jacket but there also seems to be water on the oil dipstick. I guess that could be just from condensation from sitting for awhile?? So you think just grinding it down with a Dremmel and then JB welding it would do the trick? Should I pulll the head off or do it in place?

Re: 1951 1.5 ton dump truck
Fred,
You can have my old 350 from my 72 K20, or we can steal the one from Dad's old truck. Either way we keep them in the family!

Re: 1951 1.5 ton dump truck
That's bringing back memories for me. We had one just like that but was green. MY dad and I were talking about truck. We were talking about how he should have kept it. But at the time, he was not doing any real farming, so he did not need such a large truck. As a child I hated the truck, it was hard putting wood in the truck.
