T56 into a 67......

Well no one would give any info http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=266556 so I had to go at myself. Here is a few pics. of what I have done so far.

my truck I'm working on. looking good huh?

the trans. that is coming out.

I had to test fit the T56 before knowing where to cut the floor out. Had to take out more than I would have liked to, but a necessary evil and it killed me because I've had the cab off and cleaned up all the floor by getting rid of rust and under coating everything for protection.
before cutting.

after and still need some more for the shifter.

The cross member put the trans. to high an had to be modified.

I still have a lot of work to do and will post up what I do, so if any others decide to take on the same thing.

mine came in the a car that I bought for a daily driver that has turned into a drag car, so out with the 6speed and in went a th400 with t-brake and 3600 converter..

so the T56 has been sitting in the on the floor for 2yrs.

I am using I6 engine mounts, thats what has set the motor back and down in the truck. The reason I have decided to do that is because I'm trying to get the best handling out of the truck with out spending a lot of money, so I figure with the weight back and down will help a bit.

It's going to be cold here this weekend, but I hoping to get a lot of work done on it.

Re: T56 into a 67......

What kind of headers are you using to clear the bellcrank?Looking at the passenger side they appear to angle back like 3/4s,which I like but won`t work w/manual.Will those full-lengths clear?I like the design.
Another question about the clutch. My experience with diaphram clutches is when the revs are up I loose clutch. The pedal goes to the floor and no clutch.Has anyone else had this?I`ve used 3-finger clutches because of this.I guess that`s what the weights are for on Centerforce diaphram clutches.Am I right?I`ve run them lately w/o the clutch loss. What`s your experience?I`m using an M22 on my build and wonder what way to go.

Re: T56 into a 67......

btw - and just tossing this out there, please don't take it the wrong way - it looks like you used a cutoff wheel to cut out your tranny hump. If that's the case, I'll tell ya: I went through about ten different tools while cutting out my floor because I couldn't find anything I was really happy with. I finally broke down and busted out my $19 jigsaw with a $2 metal blade and it cut through everything like butter. I was amazed. So much control over where I was going, it was just silly.

I don't think diaphragm clutches would exist if your experience with them was the norm. Sounds like something was wrong with the one you had. My zoom has been fine. I got the 1-step above stock replacement version.

I am using a hydraulic set up from my 97 TransAm and will not have a bell crank. The headers are for a 70- 81 camaro, because the headers that I have for a 63-72 truck dropped below the frame 3" and as low as the truck will be they would hit everything. I just checked and the header will clear a bell crank, also I used a set of painted headers from the same company on my 81 Z28 with a super t10 4-speed with no problem.

And I agree with Jim on the clutch thing. also know one makes a 3-finger clutch for a T56.

It's all good, but I used a plasma cutter and have a lot to clean up before I start putting in the new metal. And with it I have tons of control.

Is that a pull or a push style clutch?

Push if it's anything like the F-Body T56. Uses a hydraulic cylinder mounted in conjunction with the pedal.

Re: T56 into a 67......

on the LT1 cars they used pull type clutches and the LS1 cars are the traditional push type. so I've got a pull type

Re: T56 into a 67......

Thanks for the answers.I`m still considering rigging a hydraulic linkage so I can use 3/4 lengths.I do know others that had the same experience with diaphrams as me.We just had this conversation between three of us last weekend.I always thought a diaphram clutch was the performance design.

This is a well concieved installation. You`ve got it all covered and will result in a true performance build.Awesome!!

Re: T56 into a 67......

well I got nothing done on the swap this weekend, I had to go to the parts store to get an s10 clutch master cylinder because the on that came out of my TransAm mounts at an Angle, but the parts store had to order it. also had to order a starter for an LT1 because of the smaller flywheel.

Re: T56 into a 67......

go some stuff done.

went to a salvage yard called U-pull it and found a late 90's s10 clutch master cylinder it fit on the firewall nicely, and all I had to do was drill a hole in the peddle that would give 1.5" of travel. I used the master cylinder and line out of the s10 and connected it to the factory TransAm slave cylinder with no problems, bleed the system and the clutch disengaged and engaged properly. Here are some pics.

Did you drill the pedal rod while in the truck? That must've been fun

I would hope not since it only takes 5 minutes to pull it out

Re: T56 into a 67......

Did you add an extension/clevis onto that master cylinder rod?

I got mine mounted up and everything, but I just have a threaded end. I need to actually get it all mounted up.

Yes, I took the extension off the f-body master cylinder and got all the length I needed.

Hey SlowTruck,

Don't know what you plan for a shifter. I just received a do-it-yourself kit from Keisler Engineering to put the shifter in the forward inspection cover location. I haven't installed it yet but it looks good. (I am using a bench and have to do it but your location looks pretty far back)
