What's this part? Found it in the door....
Like the heading says- I found this rattling around in the door at the bottom. What is it? some sort of brace?

Re: What's this part? Found it in the door....
i have two doors sitting in my house as we speak so i went down and looked at them and mine are from an 85 im told and they have nothing like that but what im thinking is maybe a thing that would go behind the mirror and the screws would go into that give it a little brace and not have the screws bits into the door but that piece this would be for them small car style mirrors they put on some trucks... is it off your 74? did you have those kind of mirrors at one time??

definitely not being stripped. just starting it. not oo much work either. its been a west TX truck all its life. No rust, just rust-colored dirt!

Re: What's this part? Found it in the door....
I have to agree with old Rusty C10. Those look like aftermarket mirrors. I'll bet that was "supposed" to be a stress relief for the lower arm on the mirror. My guess is it fell inside the door when they were being installed, and the owner said "Oh well".

Re: What's this part? Found it in the door....
the owner was my Grandfather, and "Oh Well" is something he said a lot...
are we sure they are aftermarket mirrors? this is the original paint and there are no hold from a former mirror Last edited by chev74; 11-30-2007 at 08:20 PM. |

Re: What's this part? Found it in the door....
yeah i would like the top ones more if they were black with the silver writing. and i have seen a pair of the red ones black with silver writing as well. sweet i should say.
I like the M/T ones cuz they look textured. kinda like they have been rhinolined or something. just different i guess |

I have those in my truck and they are the back support for sport mirrors.

Re: What's this part? Found it in the door....
I guess that I was "sorta" right then. They are a back support, and those aren't the original mirrors. Does "close" count?

Re: What's this part? Found it in the door....
i wonder where he got those mirrors then... one of those mysteries i guess. Those are the only set i have seen like that. I dont think he would have had the sport mirrors on there either, were the originals possibly the big 3point mounted ones?

I have those mirrors on my Fords. They work well for towing or when you have a camper in the bed. I could use a set of those rat valve covers, mine are crusty stock neglected types..

Re: What's this part? Found it in the door....
I have seen mirrors similiar to those on F**ds, but I seem to recall seeing that style as a replacement mirror sold at auto parts stores and farm stores. My '77 originally had the small mirrors on it, and I didn't care for the limited rear visibility I got from them. I'd bet your G'pa felt the same way.

Re: What's this part? Found it in the door....
very possible, what mirrors should we replace them with? they are a little beaten up and one wont stay still, something is wrong with the ball-in-socket joint on the back where it pivots (looks like it had been JB Welded and has broken). Any suggestions?
