6 inches for a 68 k10
ive been looking at getting a pair of 6" springs and an ORD shackle flip for my 68 lwb k10 chevy. i checked out the tuff country E Z ride kits from ORD, they didnt hav anything specifically for a 68 but told my that a 69- 72 kits should work fine....
i myself dont know very much about this and would like sum help if wether this is true or not.. and if y'all hav sum extra info about anything i might need to know???? so can y'all please help me out here? Last edited by dinotruck68; 01-12-2008 at 03:47 PM. |

Your factory steering won't work (at least not well)with that much lift.
it is necessary to to straighten the linkage after lifting over abt. 3 inches. The old steering arm hangs down, and swings front to back, the new style sticks out to the side, and you can get a dropped arm for it. I will be taking the steering box out again, and putting in a 2WD box that swings side to side to work with crossover steering I think I am maybe 4" lifted, but I don't know what my front springs are from. I know I did add about 4 leafs from a squarebodied truck, and mine is stiff as !@#$. I also welded in some brackets and added 73-up sway bar for much greater steering responsiveness. I think I get over 12"' of wheel travel if I run up a ramp. For power steering I cut a frame horn off my 78 donor, and welded it over my frame so I'd have a 'dimple' for the newer PS box. you need exact size spacers between the frame parts. What I did is good, because it reinforces one of the most failure prone parts of the 4x4 frame. I also switched to an 78 Dana44 to work with the new steering box. Lastly, I cut the splines off my steering shaft, and welded on a set from the newer truck so I now have the collapsible shaft with the flexy coupler. The welding on this stuff better be done right because lives are at stake. I had to get a disc brakes master cylinder as well. Have a look at DIY4x4 as well as ORD for kits to deal with the springs and steering issues. I don't think either company was doing business yet when i did my swap. I must be aging.

the 69 to 72 kit will not work the front springs are to wide and will not fit in the spring hangers. I have a sky jacker kit on my 68 I dont know if they still make the kit or not.

dang all of that sounds pretty expensive... im only makin 6 bucks an hour on an after school job..but i guess il just hav to c what i can do..
im sure il be needin sum more help from time to time so so il be on the lookout for us 68 guys... so thanks y'all oh an nice suburban earl my dads been lookin for one since 4ever.. but way down here in the deep south u never see much 67-72 anythings that arent trashed by the damn humidity out here... rust sux.

you best bet is to go here http://diy4x.com/suspension.htm and get the FGB52 and then go to the salvage yard and get a set of 52in springs from the rear of a chevy truck. Use blocks for the rear you will get 4in of lift for around 350 its not going to get cheaper then that. and I have 6 in on the burb and no steering trouble on road off road is a nother issue. just dont get any were that you have to turn sharp with.

Yea i checked out skyjacker and they hav kits for 67, and 68 trucks and burbs... i kinda dont want to go through all of the trouble with changing out all of the shackles an such on the front end of my 68... sooooo now im thinking 6 in springs for the front (skyjacker) and the O.R.D shackle flip in the rear.... but 1 thing ... skyjacker says the kit is for 68-87 trucks... ??? but if it worked on ur burb it should be fine right. but whats up with the sharp turns??

I have 36 in tires so it doesn’t have the best turning radios with the stock manual steering box. I have every thing to change to cross over steering just haven’t done it yet. I’m putting a new front end in it so Ill be adding it then. Wish I was closer to getting done with my build I’m taking the springs I have off and I’m going to the DIY stuff but I haven’t bought the DIY kit yet I have a few other things I have to do first. I would call sky jacker and see how wide the springs they have listed are they may be using a 2 1/2 in wide spring with a wide bushing to make it 3 if that’s the case you can just take some off the bushing to get them to fit.

For what I did, I think the only new part I bought was longer bolts to hold the spring pack together, but It took some time for sure.
