Need help on wiring

I am working on my fuel gauge. I have read a lot on searches and FAQ section but I am still a little confused. I have a new sending unit. I have the tan wire running from it to the fuse box but it is not hooked up at the box. Can someone explain to me where it goes or send me a pic? Then on the top of the fuse box where is says fuel gauge, there is nothing hooked to it? Do I need to run a wire from there to the gauge? The gauge seems like it has some power supplied to it because when I turn my ket on it moves a little bit. It points toward the glove box all the time and it may move 1/4 inch when you turn the key on. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

OK- here's the deal on fuel gauges. The tan wire runs from the sending unit to the fuse panel and connects to one side of the fuse holder. There's also a tan wire that runs from your dash panel plug which should be connected to the other side of said fuse holder. Note that the connections are on the back of the fuse panel, which will require the removal of the fuse panel from the firewall.

just trying to help, maybe someone else will chime in who knows more, but i just studied the wire diagrams and there is a 20 gauge tan wire that goes from the gauge to the fuse panal, a 20 or 18 ga wire goes from there to the sender. and a 20 ga purple wire from the gauge to the fuse panal. i am asuming that the 20 ga purple supplies the power to the gauge and the tan wire is not hot, i dont think it goes through the fuse panal on other cars. the flutter of the guage might mean that you have power to the gauge but the tan wire is not a complete circut, i would check the tan wire between the gauge and the fuse panal for any possible shorts or mis connections. there is always the possibility that the gauge crapped out too. good luck.

if i remember right i had that problem and it was a bad gauge sounds like you have all your wires hooked up right

The tan wire is a ground wire going to the sending unit. There is a tan wire that runs from the sending unit to the fuse panel and plugs into the front where it says fuel gauge. You can just plug your tan wire from the gauge into the wire that is coming from the sending unit.

Run the wire from your tank's sending unit to that jack on the fuseblock. That line is directly tied to your gauge in the dash.

that was confusing me because that pic showed the tan wire connected towards the bottom of the fuse box. I was thinking that it should have went to the one that says "fuel gauge". thanks for the help

Shifty you are right the first time. I'm sorry for my last post. I'm medicated up right now with an upper respiratory infection so i didn't read your question right the first time. You want to plug it in at the top the bottom one is a power feed from your key. If you go there you might mess up your new sending unit. Mine is the dark brown wire at the top (Car Quest didn't have light brown) the orange is the dome and glove box lights.

That is becouse the tan wire is in the wrong spot if it is for the sending unit in those links.

Two questions: Can you please trace where it is going? What color is the wire?

I will have to look it over tomorrow. I ran out of time today. cant remember the color but I will look tomorrow. If I cant figure it out, I will try to post a pic maybe that will help.

well, I put a new end on the tan wire from the sending unit and plugged it into the prong that says fuel gauge. when I turned the key on the gauge went to about 3/4, which is about what the tank has in it. So I think everything is working now. I wish all problems were fixed that easily. I want to thank everyone for the help.

No problem just wish i wasn't as medicated on my first post so you could have got it yesterday. Some reason I was thinking you were installing a new gauge.

I'm glad Chris came in and told me I was right - I posted that info above after having a couple of beers and thought for a second that I was grossly wrong - I couldn't remember how I hooked mine up, but I swore that what I posted was right.
