IS there any reason I can't use the temp sender in the side of the head of the 6 cylinder instead of the one in the T stat housing?
I have beat the search section to death and even went to all the other sites linked to questions here - even all the diagrams here in the FAQ and my manuals...
I have found NO wiring diagrams for the six cylinder that show the Tranmission Control Spark wiring (head temp sensor and high gear sensor to make carb choke out a bit - that's in a nut shell).
I need to know where:
A) the wiring is routed from BOTH temp sensors, to the bulkhead connector and then where inside the truck.
B) the two wires to the 1 brl. carb come from/go - one is the idle solenoid and I can't name the other thing.... (1972)
I've looked all over the web, hit the end and I'm on my way back.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

Now this is speculation... I don't KNOW if this is true or not;
The temp guage sending unit is a variable rate Ohm sender. It has to move the needle over a (fairly) broad range.
The one for the TCS is basicly an off/on switch.
With that train of thought, I would say no, they are not the same unit.
A quick check at P/N's would tell you if it is the same piece or not.

well to throw in a twist, they are different physically and the truck was set up for idiot lights. In the process of switching over to guages, I replaced the sensor in the side of the head with one for guages (they had a part number choice between guages and idiot lights...) The sensor in my tstat housing is broken at the moment. There was an unused red(pink) wire laying next to the head sensor that was hooked with the power to the yellow wire on the starter solenoid.... go figure.... see, this is where the kicking and screaming part comes in.... but I'M LEARNING!

well, if you don't have the TCS junk hooked up (and why would you anyways?) then you can install your guage sending unit in the head and get your reading there for the guage. (is that what you were initially asking?) It is actually a more acurate reading of what you need to be monitoing anyways.

That's what I was thinking - I don't have the TCS stuff hooked up (leaving it that way) - I've been redoing my harnesses and eliminating stuff that just isn't used. I need to get the temp part figured out the way it was though so I can then do the switching around for the guage dash. I don't want to fry it the first time out... I just can't seem to find a schematic for the 6 cylinder - The other part I really need is to figure out what wiring is supposed to be hooked to the two pots on the carb. I believe the TCS controlled the idle adjustment pot so I can leave that out. That leaves one other one....
