What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
When I go to the gas station and put the nozzle completely in the filler it'll run full blast for maybe 2 seconds then shut off. I'm guessing I have some sort of line pinched and the air isn't venting correctly but that was the first time I put a gas tank in a vehicle so i'm really not 100% sure. thanks for the help.

Re: What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
You probably routed the main filler tube incorrectly and it’s now kinked. This doesn’t allow the gas to run down quick enough and it backs up towards the nozzle. Why did you have your tank out? Did you change any of the pieces or use everything that was pulled out originally?

Heck, maybe you just had a crap gas pump.. Try a different one first... That happened the other day filling up my wife's 2006 Durango. I had to have the pump pulled partially out and set on the slowest setting. Try the easy things first.

Re: What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
Sometimes, it takes 2-3 times before it will stay on when I fill my truck. Then, I have to watch how much I've pumped because if I leave it to shut off automatically, I get gas down the side of my truck. Mine is completely stock. I think it is just a case of the new not mixing well with the old.

Re: What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
That's what I found to be the key too, which is probably why it doesn't shut off when the tank is full.

Re: What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
on the gas tank note, does anyone know if gas can eat through JB weld?
because apparently my tank is leaking again. I shouldve just lined where it is leaking with the $20 bill I spent on the gas that is now killing the grass at my parents backyard. |

Re: What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
You can buy gas-tank specific patch material. It might be JB Weld brand, but don't just use the regular stuff.

Re: What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
More likely a venting prob.
Quote:
Used it in a "T" fitting I made for a return line when I installed my TPI fuel injection. Before I had the return plugged into the vent line that's located beside the filler tube. I couldn't fill the tank without getting sprayed with gas. Since I made the "T" fitting I've had no problems. I JB welded the brass fitting into the tubing to make this "T"

Re: What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
I agree that it's a venting problem. I had the same problem on my Ford that I use to haul crap to the dump.

Re: What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
Say, BobbyK I am about to do the same thing (add a tee fitting to my filler vent hose for a fuel pump return line. Whats was the problem? Why wouldnt the gas just run back down to the tank?

Re: What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
I had orig. "T'd" into the small vent line that runs beside the main fill tube. There was a short down-hill run that the return gas would collect.
So when I would try to gas up the vent line was unable to vent because a portion of the line was full of gas. After I made the T you see in the above pic, and placed it in the main fill tube, I never had any problems with gas puking back at me while filling up.

Re: What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
Wow, that was a quick response. Thanks! Hmmm. I am carbureted, and the only reason I am adding a return line is because with my engine swap (a '79 into a '72 body), the fuel pump has a return line, while the truck originally did not. I have added a long piece of metal fuel line to the frame, next to the supply, and now am ready (or so I thought) to splice it into the vent hose that runs next to the filler hose (just like your photo shows). Does that vent line just run into the tank? If so, I dont think I would have a problem, since the return line is 1/4" and the vent hose is 1/2". It will just drain down into the tank. But if there are baffles in the tank, or some kind of filter or something that would prevent the gas from draining back in quickly, that could cause me the same problem you had. Do you know? I have been trying to look in there with a flashlight, and stick things into the opening (nothing metal, I dont want sparks!) but I cant tell....

Re: What did I do wrong when I reinstalled my gas tank?
No, there's nothing to block the flow in the tank or vent nipple.
I only had a problem because ,like I said, my tubing ran down-hill from the tank before it started back up to the filler neck. The fuel collected in there once I shut off the engine.

My Blazer is original and does the same thing. You just have to pull it out some and find the sweet spot and run the pump on a slower setting.
