1/4 mile guru's
I used to have a 383 stroker that ran a 14.1 that I was happy with untill i built this bbc and i really feel like my small block was slow. I am Kinda wondering what you guys are thinkin this combo has the potential to run. Its gonna be about a month untill i can get to the track so i am looking to you guys for some good.... or bad news.
My set up is... 454 stock bottom end 580 lift cam Very little head work. stock size valves. air gap intake 780 holley carb hei dizzy headers. 3 inch pipe. 40 series mufflers th 350 trans 3200 stall one piece driveshaft stock 12 bolt with auburn posi and 4:11s traction bars 295-60-15 drag radials Other little mods... Fuel cell over the rear end inner fenders gone in the engine bay tranny cooler b and m shifter bucket seats no a/c or heat components battery relocated Just thought id start a threar over the disscussion on this to keep my mind at ease untill i can get to the track. Advice and constructive critiscism very welcome. Thanks guys |

I have a friend with about the same engine in a 70 nova that runs low 12's, i'm thinking with leaf springs you're probably going to have some traction issues plus you're truck is going to weigh more than his car. I'm thinking low 13's. I think you made the right choice going to a big block.

My '72 has basically the same engine with less converter, 3.73's and still has full interior, air conditioning, and weighs 4200 lbs. I've been 13.65 only being able to leave the line at 2000 rpm (brakes won't hold it very well). Good Luck.

If you have the traction issues its pretty easy to swap a leaf truck to trailing arms. I did this on my uncles 66 gmc. We did coilovers on his with the rearend and trailing arms out from under my old 71 street truck!

What's the duration @.050 on the cam ?
Will it hook at 2800 to 3000 starting line rpm ?

580 is at .050...
I still need to take it out and see if it will hook any better with the slicks and this bb. I had some minor issues with the sb. The only think im worried about swapping over to trailing arm rear is the spring perches on the axle. Other than that i have seriously considered this as a option. |

you can buy new perches! set the pinion angle and weld them on.

I highly doubt you have 580* of duration at .050" lift. Do you have a cam card?

My current setup is very similar with a smaller cam and mine does 7.90's in the 1/8th NA and 7.30's on a 150 shot. My heads are factory unported 781 ovals. It will cut a 1.6 60ft. N/A ...

I'm not sure where you are seeing that 540* duration.. Total advertised duration is 284 on the intake and 296 on the exhaust (maybe 284+296=580*) At .050" lift it's 240 intake 246 exhaust.. Last edited by Super73; 03-18-2008 at 08:04 AM. |

wow im on a totally different page.. i was thinkin lift on the cam sorry guys. man i feel dumb.
Ya i know thats baby camshaft but its also a low compression motor (8.4 to 1) . as i intended to put a blower on it at some point and dont want to rip the motor down to swap cams. When building this motor i tryed to keep my rpm range down under 5500 as that is all i intended to turn this bb. So in all relistic terms that cam intake and stall should work together. In all honesty what do you think needs to be done with the combo.... or just take it out and run. |

I'm thinking somewhere around 13.20 et.
If it hooks really good and you get the combo fine tuned 12.90's might be possible. Let us know how it comes out...
