gas milage
i replaced my plugs, wirers, distributor,air cleaners, fuel filters and rebuilt the carb. i have a 1968 straight 6 253. afterchecking the milage today it was only 8 mpg can this be right?

It's possible but to really tell we will need more info.What tranny?What gear ratio?What tire?1/2 or 3/4 ton?Loaded or not? If you give more details some of the members here may be able to give you some ideas.

i have a friend who has a f*** with a strait 6 with a 1barl carb and he was getting 20 with a 3 on the tree

My father's '78 could get 20mpg with a 250 and TotT, but it had a 2.73 rearend. Something GM did to bump cafe. I'm wondering the same thing about the 253 as well, longhorn man

If it's .030 over then it would be about 253.7 if I have the bore and stroke correct at (standard) 3.875 x 3.53. Maybe that's what he meant.

When checking mileage, use a GPS unit on flat ground. It'll give a false reading if there are lot's of hills.

Maybe I took the milage wrong I'm checking it again.
I'll get the other info this week i got the GM info and i think it is inside of the clove box It runs great my mechanic went thru all of it. he found out and fixed some things and let me know what did wrong. could I be letting it high idle to long I let idle about a minute or two and go. if it's cold out I push it in a little bit at a time. until it stops chocking when I start off. thanks for your help |

8mpg sounds really good! i get 6mpg with a freshly rebuilt 327, 373 gears and an auto 350 with 91 octane plus 108 octane boost. thats usually downhill in neutral. am i doing something wrong?
