Question Inline 6 250 starter ?

Any of you guys ever need to shim a 250 starter for starter gear / flywheel clearance?

Over the weekend, With new engine installed, New flywheel, New starter it made a real NASTY sound while turning over.

I crawled under and took a look, the stater gear was stuck in the extend postion and unable to retract until I loosed a few of the mounting bolts slightly. So I took out my die grinder and cleaned up the mounting holes and the pilot snub that sticks into the Bellhousing just a little now it spins over smooth and quiet and retracts as it should........

Any of you guys ever have to do this to any 6 bangers?

Re: Inline 6 250 starter ?

I've never had to shim a starter before. I've done it, but later realized I never needed to.

Re: Inline 6 250 starter ?

I tried to shim mine but realized when I got under there that it couldnt be done. It worked fine & one day it wasnt.... I put a new bronze bushing in the nose of the starter & it worked great again.

Re: Inline 6 250 starter ?

I had this problem many times and it's due to a bad starter. I bought 2 from Kragen, 1 from AutoZone and 1 from PepBoys and had this problem with their starters. I bought one from a mom and pop auto parts store ($100) and never had a problem after that. As far as I know the starter is still going....

Re: Inline 6 250 starter ?

The type that bolts to the block I have had to shim, but the ones that bolt into the bellhousing, small block is the same, are not the type I think of as shimmable, that type with the three bolts has never given me any trouble. Hmm.
