ive got a question for you all just for arguments sake.. i have a dual tank truck and i prolly have some rot in one of the return lines as sometimes i smell some gas when the truck sits and it smells back towards where the cab and bed meet
I was telling one of my buddies who is a bit of a know it all and usually he proves how little he knows the more he opens his mouth.. anyway hes arguing that i should replace the tanks i have ( standard metal) if there is rot in the with fiberglass tanks.. he says they are safer and they dont rot and are harder to damage
Is there any merit to his argument? i dont off road but i do sometimes go onto construction sites without paved roads If i needed a tank i was prolly ging to buy a cheapie from JC Whitney as ive used them before and never had any problems

Stick with the steel tanks. they're cheap enough and are still widely available. No fuss with wondering IF it'll fit right or if you'll need a different sender/fuel pickup tube set up

Well I am not sure. All of these trucks with tanks mounted outside the frame rail are NOT safe. You and me both have dual tanks so that makes it X2 for us...... Maybe a polly tank would be safer but I am unsure.

There is NO safety issues with the factory side tanks.
I wouldn't use an actual fiberglass tank, but if rust is an issue, you could use a plastic tank. Still, how long did the steel one you have last..... Is plastic cost effective?

ive always used metal and been satisfied.. and ive got the cheap metal ones from JC Whitney and theyve outlasted several trucks ive put them in.. The only reason ive put the question up was to see the general consensus on the plastic tanks.. as to the safety issues of the outside the rail tanks, i remember reading that the whole NBC controversey was staged and in addition GM offered some kind of plastic piece was designed by GM which made it harder for a spark to ignite the gas tank if it were punctured during a crash.. To further add to this my 86 that i had several years ago was broadsided by a Ford Taurus pretty hard and there were no issues with the tank leaking or cracking so im no more concerned driving my 82 chevy pickup that i would be driving any other vehicle in my fleet or any truck i may add to the fleet
