I just finished cleaning the old undercoat off my inner fenders and am impressed at how well this has protected the metal for all these years...both inner fenders are perfect! This will be Friday night cruiser so I am considering doing the shake and spray undercoating again. Other options would be Rhino Liner or some comparable product. When I stripped the old material off I used a little too much heat in a couple of spots and took it down to the bare metal. Should I sand and paint before undercoating?

I sandblasted my inner fenders, primed them, used the shake and spray undercoating, then when that was dry I sprayed the top side with a gun. Worked out well for me.

I am using Rattle Guard. It is like Rhino Liner and/or Line-X, but you can spray it yourself. This stuff is nice, not like the cheap stuff you can buy at Wal-Mart. It has about 4-5 different parts that have to be mixed, and it has to be sprayed through an undercoating gun. I had my doubts at first about this, but bought a kit to experiment on the bottom side of my cab. I changed my mind after spraying it. Once dry, this stuff is about 1/8"-3/16" thick.

Both of those sound good. I noticed some trucks at the Tacoma show this weekend that had standard undercoating on the inner fenders so if it is good enough for a show truck...hmmmm.

Fast68...running without inner fenders looks really cool! It rains too much here and I will probably get stuck out in the rain once or twice.

I wish to heck they would have undercoated the entire cab when this thing was new because it would have saved a good deal of rust and work if they had. My dad used to have his new cars double undercoated and now I know why. I have heard in the last few years dealers saying that the new cars won't rust and you don't need to undercoat! Well that might be true with the zinc plated sheet metal etc. but I feel like undercoating the he!! out of this thing for sound proofing and protection...it lasted 35 years...it can't be all that bad!

dont get me started on rust rot and holes and missing metal, you think its bad out there well then,, come here, lol unless you consider missing bed floors, missing cab corners, inner and outer rockers, entire wheel arch lips, cab floors and door skins minor rust. let 67rphd1 show you some pics of rust here, hehehe

Ok, this may sound a bit wierd, but I found that roofing tar works wonders!

Many years ago, I bought a gallon of Wesleys rubberized brush on undercoating for about $10.00/gallon. When it came time to buy another can, I couldn't find it anywhere so I tested roofing tar. It looks and works exactly the same.

Now this isn't for a show truck but if you have a daily driver and are looking for some protection, this may be for you. And best of all, it's about $5.00 a gallon at Lowes!

Just a note on the spray undercoating. This stuff looks great when you spray it on but it doesn't last very long. You'll be recoating every other year at best. The roofing tar holds up! You could use the spray stuff on top of the tar for a better finish though.

This one will "get you"........I tossed a set of cherry front inners when I built the tilt front end on the longhorn! Excess weight.......GONE!!!!!!! .....69

69...I knew all you Longhorn guys were weird...LOL! I saw a perfect inner at the swap meet for $10...driver's side of course. Trying to take weight of these trucks is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic!

I have heard of guys undercoating with roofing tar and the stuff is durable and does last if you can stand the smell and mess.

Yeh, don't wear a white shirt when applying it! LOL I get slopped up when I use the spray on stuff!

The roofing tar will be dry by the next day so if you can handle the smell when applying it, your good to go. (it's not that bad)

Nope,sorry Longhornmail......I just dont have the room to save too many pcs,So had to get rid of the tin that I didnt use. I have plans to build a set of aluminum inners.....but like the rest of the truck,Im gainin on it......but still have a ways to go! Anybody know how many tin mods it takes for a full custom?.......69longhorn.
