New Carb installed and engine wont idle HELP
I just installed an Edelbrock 4 Barrel 600cfm on my 283. The engine won't stay idling but it will run for about 20 seconds if the idle is set REALLY HIGH. The vaccuum and PCV valves are plugged, the port on the back is plugged, it should run. It is a manual choke and mounted on the 2 barrel intake manifold.

Re: New Carb installed and engine wont idle HELP
i had the same problem with my edelbrock. It was also smoking white for some reason. After messing with it for about a year, I put on my buddies carb and it started up like a champ. I returned it for a new one and the new one was fine. You could have a bad carb?

Sounds like you might have a vacuum leak somewhere to me. Are you sure there's not a vacuum leak around the base of the carb?

I checked all the seals and it is all solid. The problem sounds like a vacuum leak but I can't find it. I will have to get a vacuum gauge and then we can see. As far as I'm concerned I'll just rebuild the 2gc that I have and wait until I put my built 350 in to get a 4 barrel. No big deal to me.

A quick, easy way to check for a vacuum leak is with a can of starting fluid. Spray it, slowly and a little at a time, around any area where there could possibly be a leak. If the motor idles up, voila, you have found the leak. Just a backyard way to do it.

Re: New Carb installed and engine wont idle HELP
I had the same issue w/ an Edelbrock carb.....choke would keep it going and I could pump the gas but NO idle.......gave up and put on a new carb and it fired right up and ran well w/ about 3 adjustments. The new carb was an edelbrock also.

Funny huh! I thought my post would get trashed, but I also had checked just about everything. I thought I just didnt know what the heck i was doing until my friend suggested trying his carb. After returning it and getting a different one I discovered I wasnt the problem.
