Rear brakes
'81 Silverado 1/2 ton 2 w/d.....The rear resevoir on my master went dry due to leaky wheel cyl. Cleaned everything up, replaced the parts, now can't get the rear lines to bleed out air. At least the fluid is not lowering after about 4 or 5 attempts. Am I not giving it enough time, or do I have to bench bleed the master cyl? Thanks..........

Re: Rear brakes
You probably have the proportioning valve "popped". It is a saftey device that cuts the pressure to the leaking side. That way you still have some brakes. Is the brake light on?
Try opening a bleeder to the front brakes and pushing the pedal. When it hits the bottom there should be a "click". That is the valve moving back to center. Open both rear bleeders at that point and allow the system to "gravity bleed". Just be sure that the master cylinder stays full as the fluid runs down. |

Re: Rear brakes
Do I "weigh" the pedal down? Or will the system gravity bleed w/ the pedal up?
Thanks for your advice........... |

Re: Rear brakes
i used a hand bleeder during my axel swap, i left tthe lines disconnected to long so i drained the whole system out like a retard..
so get a hand bleeder and bleed it out it'll take a minute but it worked for me

Re: Rear brakes
It will just run out one it's own. It takes a while, so don't forget it and let the master cylinder run dry.....or you are starting over.

Re: Rear brakes
Thank-you to ALL for your advice. I will remove the master and bench bleed it. That makes a lot of sense to me now. I bought a "one man brake bleeder from NAPA. It's a neat little check valve w/ vinyl tubing you attach to the bleeder screw. You press the pedal air/fluid exits, when you release, air cannot re-enter.
