I've been cleaning
Here's a couple of pics of my motor after replacing the heads due to a bad valve. First the before:
Nice huh? Here's a couple of after pics: Amazing what you can do with some degreaser, rattle cans and a bunch of elbow grease. Forgive the cap and wires, they're 14 years old. Wish I had an exhaust system now. |

Thanks, they're $56 at summit. They don't really have a filler cap opening though.

Hey A/F.......I see your ghetto motor mount is still there!!! Your engine looks great.........how did you decide to leave the bottom end and just go for heads?

It was easy, I just looked at my account balance. The cylinder bores didn't have much of a ridge and I didn't hear any knocking when I fired it before, so I decided to wait and see how it runs before doing anything more drastic. If I'm going to rebuild a bottom end, it's going to be a 350 or 383. |

That is One Fine rattle-can rebuild!
Can't you use your old exhaust manifolds (after you paint them, of course) Dan

Re: I've been cleaning
One of the old manifolds has a broken flange. All three studs broke off on the other one. I think it will be better in the long run to just replace them rather than have them repaired. I'm thinking I want the $179 ceramic coated headers from summit. They are supposed to be made by Flowtech.

Re: I've been cleaning
looks 100% better but, I noticed you had brass plugs where the heater hoses go. Are you planing on running the engine like that? It is not a good idea. You need to put a heater hose on and just loop it. Has something to do with flow. I just don't want to see you fry something.

Re: I've been cleaning
Hmmm, I didn't know that. No need for a heater in houston, so I wanted the cleanest appearance. I guess I'll connect a short loop of hose.

Re: I've been cleaning
Great looking job, Anthony!
Chevy Fleetside is right about the loop in the heater hose. This loop normally provides a continuous path of coolant, regardless of whether the thermostat is actually open or not. Keeps hot spots from forming in the block and heads. On the 292 6, there is an even larger bypass hose that keeps coolant flowing at all times.

Re: I've been cleaning
Thanks everybody, I appreciate it. I just don't like to get dirty when I work on my stuff. I put the carb on it (sitting since 94) and fired it up today. It's really loud, but it was definitely hitting on all 8. I guess that calls for one of these:
I'm thinking about ordering the Summit branded ceramic coated headers for $179. Anyone have a recommendation for some cheap but good sounding mufflers that I can bolt on? Open headers will be a bit too much for my neighbors. |
