Hey folks,

I just finished pulling off my stock intake manifold to put on an aftermarket one, and I've discovered quite a bit of carbon buildup. (Thats what I think it is anyway.) I've been trying to clean up as much of it as possible, but It seems to be quite heavy inside one of the intake ports, which is circled in red. It this going to cause me any huge problems? It seems like it could be a result of worn rings, but I only know enough to be dangerous to myself...

Will it be ok to use my shop vac and a screwdriver to chip as much of it off as possible? I'm not looking to spend the $ on rebuilding the engine, but I'd like to do as much as I can while I have it out of the pickup and in my garage.

Any help is appreciated!

Screwdriver and shop vac is fine to clean it up. Lay a few paper towels down in the lifter valley. That will help to keep the grit getting into the oil pan. Make sure after you are done to wipe it out really good. I would leave the shop vac on while slowly picking away at the build up. Ice pick or and owl will work well also.

Oh yeah since it looks like you have the valve covers off. Clean the oil returns if they are sludged up.

just be very careful to get all the crud out of the engine before you button it back up

Be careful about cleaning and everything should be ok. Holding a shop vac close while chiping at it is helpful, but I would cover the lifter valley with towels anyway.

It is also the same port that feeds your EGR valve.

Thanks for the help guys! I'm carefully cleaning out the gunk, taking care not to knock anything down into the rod valley or further into the engine. I'll post some pictures of the cleaned up project when I finish.

Inside that red circle is not an intake port. That is the exhaust heat cross-over. It is there for two reasons. It helps to speed the warm-up process by allowing exhaust heat to run under the intake manifold. Also, more importantly, it heats the choke pull-off coil of your "divorced choke" style carburetor.
Many "hi performance" intake manifolds block these passages.

The "board time" has been re-set since the fire, so things are not chronological....It will take a few days for the new posts to settle this out.

It says that I made that post at 4:17 this afternoon, but it was really yesterday. I didn't even get home until after 6:00. I have seen several posts like that this evening.
