Re: Oh crap, i need ideas
I would try soaking it with some Kroil or PB blaster then use a small pipewrench or vice grips to screw it out.

Re: Oh crap, i need ideas
my 100th post might as well be constructive
vice grips sometimes work... especailly if... in the past i have used a dremel to flatten two sides of the bolt which almost makes it possible to put an open end wrench on the bolt. similarly, i have seen guys use a cut off disc on a dremel and grind a groove in the end of the sheared bolt and use a common screwdriver. at least you have plenty of room to work! good luck!! *edit* also a good idea to grind a little bit at a time so the heat doesn't warp the bolt and make it harder to get out. and spray the PB blaster on it while it's still hot from grinding, and let it cool... the cooling process will sometimes draw the penatrant into the threads better than just blasting it while it's cold.

Re: Oh crap, i need ideas
Do they still make Kroil? I have like 10 cans, small and large from my girlfriends dad who used to work for a company building aircrafts. I thought i was lucky to have some. Kroil is so much better than the competition. Anyways, good luck on extruding that bolt. Shaving down enough to get a wrench or vise grips on will work, so will welding a nut on the end if you have the supplies. Good luck.

Re: Oh crap, i need ideas
I'd say spray it, try vise grips, if that doesn't work weld a nut on it and try that.

Re: Oh crap, i need ideas
Decide what you're going to do and get everything ready.
If you go the vise grips route, get the vise adjusted to fit the bolt. Heat the bolt with a propane torch and after it's hot put some was on the bolt. Bee's wax is preferable, but ol' fashioned paraffin (candle wax) works fine. The heat will suck the wax in and lubricate the threads. Start removing the bolt immediately. If you weld the nut on, do the same thing with the candle wax. On the plus side, if you want to call it that, at least you have a little to work with because the bolt's not snapped off flush with the block.

I'm a big fan of, "Do it once" or "Do what works" and be done with it for good. Get the welder out, a nut and some type of wax and Get 'r done.

Re: Oh crap, i need ideas
If all the other good ideas fail you can center punch near center of bolt and drill with a drill bit smaller than bolt. If you use a left handed drill bit it will back out on it on some times. If not a easy
out will work.

Re: Oh crap, i need ideas
I have an easy out set up. I bought it at NAPA for $12.00. Since I don't have a welder, my cigarette doesn't put out enough heat to heat up the bolt, and the wife won't let me take any of her candles, I though it would be my best option. So far it has worked the best for me.

Re: Oh crap, i need ideas
looking through all the other ideas looks like you would be done by now. If not, I guess the only idea left is if you can't get the bolt out of that block pull the motor get a new one once its installed run a bolt in a ways then smack it and break it off close to the block. Then try the above ideas again. If you still don't succeed then remove engine and try another one. sooner or later you will get that bolt out..... oh yeah.. keep in mind you don't have to have the engine in to break the bolt off. You can do that before you put the engine in too. The end result will be the same.
Good luck... I didn't say it would be the best idea i read through the others they took all the good ideas i just threw out the only one left.. OH yeah theres one more. .....nevermind my wife just said that one. It cant be a good idea then.......

Re: Oh crap, i need ideas
BTW, I have used most all of the methods above, and I have found welding on a nut works better than anything if you have the means.

Re: Oh crap, i need ideas
[Hijack ON] FYI on the Kroil. Kroil can be found at most large and high end firearms supply sites such as Brownells, Midway, and Natchez. You can buy it in aerosols or by the quart.
Once you go Kroil, you won't go back. I tried PBB, it worked OK, but I found that if I spray down a rusty bolt, and forget it for a few weeks, I have a gummy mess. Spaying my wet allen wrenchs to prevent rust was a BIG mistake. Kroil has never left my stuff gummy or rusty. [Hijack OFF]

If the bolt was tight enough to break off, chances are the easy out will break too, then you have a big mess and will need to hunt down a carbide bit to try and get easy out removed.

We may have respectfully agree to disagree. I have used reverse twist, i.e. "left hand" bits before. The end of a bolt is generally harder than the rest of the bolt. When trying to drill a bolt (with a left hand drill) to prepare to use an E Z out often times the twist drill will "bind" and back the broken bolt out. Having said all that, I use the heat/wax thing first. Also, why didn't you say anything about dropping in for the BBQ thing earlier? It's only a 12-13 hour drive from here. I lived in PHX (Maryvale area) for years. Before my son moved to SC, he lived in Surprise, worked in SW PHX. BTW, I love this site. El Jay

Re: Oh crap, i need ideas
Hey what a bunch of great ideas. but Houp was right it would not budge. No welder close, and the left hand driil bit would not turn it. I got it drilled out late last night and will re-tap it today. lesson learned: if it aint going in, quit turning the wrench to the right. If that line is not famous yet it should be.Thanks to all who replied. keep the thoughts in mind for next time I have to help someone else with this problem. ( I lied i'm sure i will do it again). what a great site. Gary
