which mufflers
I'm looking for a muffer recommendation, probably mainly from the GenIII guys since they have a little bit different sound than the sbc.
Anyway, I don't want the loud metalic sound that 40 series flowmasters have. I had those on my 72 GMC, and I guess I'm over that. What I will be running is long tube headers, 3" pipe with and X - pipe in it, and turn downs in front of the axle. I want something that is free flowing, with a low deep rumble, but not overly loud. I know loud is very subjective, but what better way can I explain it. I was at the track the other day and a friend with a LS1 Camaro with true duals said his exhaust with Moroso Spiralflow (or something like that) wasn't too loud.....it was WAY louder than I want. I was kinda thinking about Hooker Aerochambers. I had a Hooker catback on my LS1 formula that sounded good, but that is a crossflow muffler (1 in, 2 outs) so it's not representative of what I'll have on my truck. I have Magnaflow Magnapacks (essentially glasspacks w/ stainless steel packing) w/ x-pipeon my corvette and it is also way too loud for what I want. I know Magnaflow makes a kit for our trucks, but I really don't feel the need to pay the extra money for stainless steel, cause I'm still going to use some Flowmaster Ball-Flange collectors (no leaks). Also, since I want it to dump in front of the axle, it will be tucked up in the frame rail, and it's connecting to LS1 headers (angles and widths are different) I don't think it will work real well. I figure I'll have the pipes bent up by an exhaust shop, but still need to know what mufflers. So let's hear some suggestions. If you have sound clips that would be great. |

Re: which mufflers
My son runs the Flowmaster Truck series 50 on his 96 Z71. Very "hush-hush". They are turned down in front of the rear axle. He likes the quiet. I run the series 40. I like it loud.

Re: which mufflers
I am going with the largest magnaflows they make behind a shorty header, 2.5" exhaust, with an H pipe exiting behind the rear wheels on a 72 sub, behind a genIII 6.0L. I should get to hear it some time next week- but I was assured it should be pretty quiet, mufflers are HUGE
29" long 5"x11" and you can see right through em. I'll post again after I hear it... ![]()

Re: which mufflers
I'm running dual 2 1/2" stainless with flowmaster 50 series mufflers on the 402. It sounds great, love that "pinging" sound the stainless makes. The 50's are not quiet in my opinion, they have a nice rumble at idle, get kinda quiet between off idle and about 30 MPH, then I get he rumble back above 30 or so. Mine exit behind the rear wheels....close to factory position. Greg

Re: which mufflers
Anything with a cat will sound a lot quieter than our straight through systems...you really can't compare anything past 1975 with what we have. I run Thrush Turbos and with a 2 1/2" pipes and a 3" tip out back. The sound is on the hush side with a bit of a drone at 40 mph [1500 rpm].

Re: which mufflers
i run a big case magnaflow, if i remember right its the 22"case and mine is the 3"singleinlet/3"singleoutlet, and I would not run anything bigger, this magnaflow is very quite compared to any of them, believe me I had gone thru alot of exhaust system with this one being the best so far!! nice low rumble, no drone and no rasp!!! I have longtubes with Y pipe and the whole exhaust is 3"

Re: which mufflers
You can hear all kinds of exhaust clips on youtube, but I have not been able to find any good clips of the Edelbrock mufflers. Is anyone running them? I would love to hear a set of these. Flowmaster now has sound clips on their website. I think magnaflow has sound clips on their website too, but of course mufflers sound different on all types of various applications.

Re: which mufflers
im running 3in cherrybomb glasspacks, 2.5in to the mufflers, then 3in from the mufflers to 3.5in tips. Its got a real deep sound from idle to about ~3000rpms any higher than that and she barks a lil bit, but they sound real good, affordable too!!

Re: which mufflers
I like the Spintechs a lot of the newer cars are running but I'd say they're a little on the loud side.

Re: which mufflers
Hooker Aerochamber is the only muffler I ever bought that I definitely felt a true power increase with no other mods. They are well made too! I have one on my ZR2 which has a 4.3.

Re: which mufflers
I've got the magna flow "kit" on my truck and think it's perfect sound/loudness. You can barely hear it just driving around inside the cab and can have normal conversations on the freeway. But they open up a when you get on it, but not loud enough to alert the authorities if you know what I mean : )
