putting power steering on my 67 4wd 2wd gearbox diff's

what is the difference if any from a 2wd and 4wd power steering gearbox , I got a gearbox yesterday off a 4x4 will it work ok ? I see the pitman arm is different but other than that will it work ?
I don't want to start searching for six cylinder bracket's unless I'm sure this gear will work ,,,, ?

A 4wd steering box is different from the 2wd. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the 4wd box moves front to back, and the 2wd box moves side to side.

While physically the box casting is the same, the pitman (output) shafts are different. The 4x4 shaft has a straight shaft, and the arm is attached with a pinch bolt. The 2wd shaft is tapered, and the arm is attached with a nut in the center.

It won't work for a couple of reasons, one you can do something about though. For one jeffspower is correct about the pitman shaft being different for the 4x4 than the 2x4. So you cannot use the 2x4 gear. However if you find or purchase a 4x4 gear, you will still have to dent the frame to bolt it on and if I remember correctly you still will have to shim the gear out because the 67/68 chassis doesn't vave the dimples for the steering gears that the 69 and lator do. yea I was aware about the dimple in the frame , my 67 frame will soon have that dimple ! but this gear won't work so at least I know that now ,

Adding options? It seems that you could add some washers instead of dimpling the frame.

ask this in the 4X4 area they know all about swapping the internals between teh 2WD and the 4WD parts they are interchangeable and stuff..
but i dont know how to do it.. but it is somethign you do for exptreme lifts usually ( i'll have to soon also grrr)

Big68 is right. This is the reason you do use a 2wd box when doing crossover steering. I have a 2wd box installed and a 4wd box laying under the bench that was removed. If you need a close up picture of something I can get that for you. As far as what you need to use and do the crossover that depends on the front end you currently have.

I just bought this bracket for my "non dimpled 68 frame" looks like it will work once I get the alignement figured out. Brothers has them on sale for $60 right now but I got mine at a car show...They are actually advertised for 60-66 frames though...http://www.brotherstrucks.com/prodin...number=PSC6066

hope this helps... better than beating the frame to death. It has a backer plate to reinforce the frame...

frames are the same from 64-69. those adapter plates are for 2wd only or for a crossover system; I don't think that they are for the 4x 4 box.
but why not just use the 4x4 box and hook it up the stk 4x4 way to the l/frt wheel.
washers are bad news behind the box as this causes it to crack the frame.. space it out with a piece of 1/2" plate cut out to match the rear of the box

you lost me there... I have to use this bracket for my 4x4 or I would have to "dimple" the frame... which isn't happening. The gearbox isn't that much different from 2wd to 4wd, just the pitman arm swings a different way..

69 and up frames don't need this mod, some 67 and 68's do though.

1. I don't know why the manufactured brkts are not specified for 4 x 4's but only for 2wd's
2. when I made the spacer behind my strg box, I made it from 1/2" plate so that the box would clear the frame. putting washers as spacers will help the frame to crack there easier due to higher stress from the the twisting action of the box.
3.use the std 4 x 4 str box and hook it up the the traditional way that it was set up on 4 x 4's with the d/link going to the d/side frt wheel
4 if you want to fabricate crossover strg then use a 2wd box and the d/link goes to the passenger side

if you cannot tell the difference between the function between a 2wd and a 4wdr strg box you should leave the job to someone that knows
4. I am under the impression that the frame rails are the same from 64-69. perhaps that change came in 69 instead of 70
