64 Crew Cab on-line...
Hey Folks,
I've been peepin round here for past few years and just today registered. Been drivin Chevy cars and trucks all my life with a few other GM's under the belt too: Caddy, Pontiac & Buick. Now driving a 64 C20 longbed 3door crew cab pickup. It's daily driven and work in progress. It's rough & a beast but it a runner gets da eyeballs strainin everywhere I take it. Just wanted to say howdy to the 60-66 Chevy Truckin Crowd. Some of the names here I recall from other / similar forums - kewl!!

Welcome to the forum. You have some nice trucks, I dig that 64 with the white walls. What brand and size tires are those?

Yup its a "chore" parking it but I can paralell park when need be. Driving land yachts all my life make it's easy
I hail from San Fran Bay Area, lived in SJ in the early 70's and cruised Story & King (Lowridin:-) in SJ in the late 70's- early 80's. Transplanted to SoCal a few years ago. Can't recall the tire size - got'em @ Stockton Wheel in 2000 when I was still up North Thanks Y'all!

Nice crew cab, I'm building the one John mentioned before. Do you have any pictures of what is used for a headliner?

Re: 64 Crew Cab on-line...
PR, yea I do have pic of headlinder. its just the same material that us used in older cars in for the rear package tray. Seems it was formed by soaking it a bit to round the edges then covers in some foam and then a headliner material. I'll get some coffee going in a few and take a few pics. Also if needed go to my website to see the roof reinforcment framing.
Thanks all for the warm welcome. This site is pretty dang K E W L!!

Re: 64 Crew Cab on-line...
See your truck frequently! I work for a local Fire Department and see it around town and across the street from the gym. You had a 14 bolt in the back a while ago, did you transplant that in yet? I have a 1/2 ton LWB 72 I'm working on. Welcome and the next time you see someone waving at you from a fire truck...that would be me.

Re: 64 Crew Cab on-line...
Hey justcuz! I was working at AT&T - next door to the gym. I say was.. They laid off again. It's my 2nd go around with them! Should known betta! Out of work and truck stuff is on hold so I'll hang here for a bit
i live bout mile up from where ya seen me parked. I just moved up from Oceanside to be closer to the office and then the mass layoff a few weeks later. Anyway... I bought a 12 bolt rear you saw from a cat in hesperia. it was from a 73 but the backing plates were welded to the tubes. i want to run disc brakes out back. it needed to have flanges welded, tubes cut.... and dont know how to weld so i decided to sell the rear to a guy in az. I deliverd to the guy in az a mall parking lot just off the 10. as soon as i got the $ i handed it over to another that was there in the same lot that day. he unloaded his 76 chevy longbed full of 66 1/2 ton rearend, suspension and grill support & other misc parts. i got it all for the 200 i sold the single rearend for! The 66 rearend turned out to be a 4:11 not the 3:73 I was hoping for so its off to the diff shop soon. Is there a local one out here in SGV? Dat's it foe now! Outta work OSP Engineer....

Re: 64 Crew Cab on-line...
it was a12 bolt from a 73 not 14. no dirdect bolt in. new to the area and dont know any welders/ fabbers as i did up north. i dont weld (i want to learn) so i got rid of it. i'm gonna swap the current eaton to the 66 12 bolt i picked up.
btw, the brakes on my eaton grenaded so i swaped to 14 bolt disc from a cat on ebay in jan 06. i could not find drums.

Re: 64 Crew Cab on-line...
The Eatons are actually a very strong rearend and if you already have a rear disc conversion, I'd leave it in. Do you have front disc brakes on it? If not there are plenty of wrecking yards to find 73 and up spindles, calipers and rotors for the disc conversion. That is if you want to keep it 8 lug. If not half ton stuff is plentiful around here. I would suggest a 14 bolt semi-floater for the rear. They were used in lots of applications and if you get really lucky you can find one out of a 454 SS that has the 5 on 5 bolt pattern. The aftermarket has tons of bolt on caliper brackets for each rear axle application, so pick what you want. The 14 bolt semi-floater was used in lots of vehicles. 80's and up light duty 3/4 ton trucks and Suburbans, 88 and up light duty 3/4 tons, H2 Hummers and others I can not remember now. ity is easy to tell a semi float from a full floater. The ring gear bump on the rear cover is left of center on a semi-floater and right of center on a full floater. I'll check around on gears for the Eaton, but 3.90 may be the lowest for that rear axle. In a 12 bolt 3.73 is the break point for carriers. Anything above it has a different carrier. You can find a Detroit locker for your Eaton and with 3.90 gears and an overdrive trans later you can cruise pretty good!

Re: 64 Crew Cab on-line...
my main objective with this rearend stuff is mileage. i want better mileage in this big rig o mine. i drive the OC often & home to SanFran from time to time. if i can get the 3.90 great! but chances are slim at best.
alternative to kill 2 birds with one stone - direct bolt in 64-68 rearend and 3.73 gears. swap to disc later. i can run a 700r4 with the eaton and do better i guess. working on a tight budget right now. also want to get ride of the tall blackwall radials (31.5") want to run www as i did on my last c10 w/t stroked SB400/th350 and 3.08 out back. ran just fine down the highway. so i figured if i wanted "economy" in such a big rig i need to swap the rearend. here is what the guy running the truck wrecking yard in arcadia (peck *& live oak) told me. I can take my truck with this eaton to a diff shop in alhambra and have them install a different drop out with 3.46 gears! and possibly swap out shafts for a 6 or 5-lug as well. Anybody ever hear of this pumpkin swap on an eaton? Will post that for a new topic. will see what happens when a new job comes my way....

Re: 64 Crew Cab on-line...
Here are the pics of the 2 piece headliner currently that came with the rig. first few are from the day i picked up the truck just N of Napa, CA the rest were taken today. the headliner was full of walnut shell, varmint turd, sticks, etc. Ofcourse we took it the headliner down and tucked it away in the bed on the ride back to SoCal. Kept it to use as a template for the new piece to be made down the line. I stripped off the foam and fabric the washed & dried and repeated this several times before placing the base back into the truck. it was soooo loud with out anything up there! Cab floor is fine and covered with dyna mat stuff and a standard carpet.
Just in case anyone's wonderin - the 60/40 split bench is out of a 94-98 Chevy truck . Very comfortable set of recliners!
