Towing Question
I bought a small trailer that's 50 miles away from me. The issue is that the trailer has a military type hitch on it and i don't have a pintle hitch at the moment.
Is there any way i can get this trailer home (safely) without buying a pintle hitch? I'll be on back roads for the whole trip. I won't be driving over 55 i'm sure. |

Re: Towing Question
Do you have a reciever trailer hitch? Try your local rental yard. Maybe they will have one to fit your reciever you could rent. If all you have is a step bumper you may be out of luck.

Re: Towing Question
Thanks 87Bob! A reply worth responding to!
I don't have one, but i think that's my only option. I even have a lead on a used one for my truck. I need to pull it the safest way possible. Thanks for your help. I'll look into the rental option for now. Thanks again! |

Re: Towing Question
doing what i do for a living ((army =-) )) i have experienced a ton of unpleasent situations with poorly maintained trucks.
now the closest i have gotten with a pintle style trailer, to tow on a non pintled truck is a lot of chain well wrapped around the neck and trailer hitch and other parts. . . but unfortunatley there is no way to stop the trailer when you do that. it will swing forward and hit your truck every time you try to stop.. now if you had a interchangeable hitch you could rent a pintle attachment for it. . . but if you know anyone who has an old MV (military vehicle) everyone of them has a pintls it's been the standard since like WWI.... but other then that, trying to "rig something" for your truck is more dangerous and costly then just getting the proper hitch. good luck

Re: Towing Question
i ended up buying the pintle hitch. However, I did come across another issue. With the shackles I have installed on the rear of the truck, the trailer tongue is LOW!
It's not really a big issue because I won't use the trailer much at all. I have a completely level truck now and I won't use the trailer enough to justify having a jacked up rear! LOL Thanks everyone for pushing safety first! I |
