Always A New Problem...

So the other day just after i fixed the fuel problem. I have been driving my 1971 C10 around daily. When I turn it on now and it is at idle the is this 'clicking' sound coming what seems to be under the left valve cover. And when I press the gas it goes then makes a lounder click/ping/knock (dont really know what to call it) as it returns to idle. What could that be? Any estimates financially?

Re: Always A New Problem...

Could be a lifter tick. Could be a valve issue. Could be a bad rod bearing or wrist pin. Could be the barometer was dropping.

There are quite a few possibilites...just throwing some ideas out there. Any more info on your combo? Or specifics in general, especially to help the more knowledgable diagnose the problem.

Re: Always A New Problem...

How would I go about to better diagnose the problem? I am kind of lost in where to start

Re: Always A New Problem...

Get some "Rocker Stoppers" to put on the rocker arms so you won't get hot oil all over everything when you run it without the rocker covers. Some are small metal clips that cover the hole in the arm, others are a plastic-type that has a spring clip to hole it in place.

Just a suggestion....

It is coming from somewhere in the valve covers or under them I am not sure i am going to try and see if an of the rockers are loose then ill try and go from there.

Re: Always A New Problem...

Start the motor and put your hand on the valve cover, if it's coming from there you will feel it. Make SURE you have the truck out of gear AND the e-brake on.

Also, what type of oil pressure do you have?

I cant feel anything out of the ordinary when I feel the valve cover. I have relitivly high oil pressure now. 75% on the gauge.

Re: Always A New Problem...

If you don't have a stethescope, pick up an old broom handle or metal pipe section and put one end in your ear and the other on the valve cover. Move it up to each cylinder and you should be able to isolate the tick. Could be an exhaust leak as well, they sound a lot like lifters sometimes.
