New to this forum, old salt otherwise,...
Yo! Y'all!
Building a free (hauled from a cow pasture near Wyoming), nearly rust-free, '78 3/4 ton 4x4 P/U using my ol', rusty, beater, '73 3/4 ton 4x4 flatbed (from Missouri) as a donor. Out went the full-time 4x4 corporate front axle/spring combo in exchange for the flatbed's front spring assembly and Dana 44 with Warn locking hubs. Out went the 4120 lb rated rear spring/axle assembly in exchange for the flatbed's 5560 lb rated rear assembly. New tall tires and the P/U sits proud! Refurbished, or junkyard replaced, all that I could, and bought new for anything I couldn't. Built a 350 V8 that'll produce near 400 ftlbs of torque and about 325 hp, just like the one I run in my '76 Camaro that I built about 30,000 miles ago, and drive everyday to work. Had the P/U's only really fine part, a TH400, rebuilt by AAMCO. Added a new 1200-1500 stall speed converter and had them imstall a long output shaft (2WD version,...the 4WD version is "rare as the dodo"), and bought a modified twin stick, rebuilt, NP205 transfercase from Off Road Design in Carbondale, CO. to solve the tough shifting of the NP205 and allow me independant control of the front and rear axles. Also purchased the "rare as a dodo" reproduced TH400/NP205 aluminum adapter from the same source. The "bulletproof" NP205 as modified will allow me to shift on-the-fly and give me rear wheel high/low, 4x4 high/low, and FRONT wheel drive high/low! New grille, dashpad, floor covering (underlayment, 1/4" foil-backed wool, and full-floor vinyl,...after minor floor repairs), weatherstripping, and just finished re-upholstering the seat last Sunday in the near 100 degree heat,...damn hot, but sure made that vinyl contour nicely! Just finished electrical, and working on the fuel system now (aux tank was disconnected and is full of running rust! Donor flatbed's 20 gal tank will substitute nicely, and I pulled it tonight, I'll wash and dry it in the AM). A new six port valve will swap tanks and I'll add a small fuel gauge below the dash so I can monitor both tanks continuously. Nearing driveline installation,...then I'll measure, select the best of my front and rear driveshafts, and have them altered to fit the installation. Brand new steel hood awaits installation, as does a new rear chrome bumber to match the perfect front one. Glad to be here and I hope to contribute as much as I can by passing on the knowledge and techniques that I've learned over thirty plus years of repairing, building, and painting all types of cars and trucks. Todd, alias asphaltburner. |

Re: New to this forum, old salt otherwise,...
Yo! walts_restoration!
Glad you like my choice! I just got lucky that it was nearly abandoned out there with the cows,...didn't even have a rear window! BUT N Colorado/Wyoming wind and dry saved it! I expect that I'll have about $7000 into the whole project when I get to smoke all four wheels at once for the first time,...or maybe I'll put 'er in front wheel drive and scare some folks! Anyway, the factory fuel tanks (one from from each truck) are drying in my driveway right now, having found the cheap, aftermarket aux. tank full of running rust! Into the flatbed it went this AM to haul to the junkyard with all the other leftover crap,...it'll bring $100/ton when I'm done! That'll pay for the cost of flatbedding this '78 P/U to my house from the cow pasture! Sorry, I thought I had pics on nastz28.com but they could be on previous pages in my thread that you've not seen! More to come, and I will probably retire this thread, and head to the more appropriate forum soon,...isn't it 73-8?(something,...but oddly not '80) trucks forum? Todd. |

Re: New to this forum, old salt otherwise,...
Love the old deere. My old mans got a 1938 John deere A on the farm, never been left outside or in the rain a day of its life, all near completely original, and about 9 other tractors of various shape including an Oliver hart par.
Our favorite toy is our 1957 alise d14, it was a demonstraiter model, factory tach, cigarette lighter, gauges, its a pretty nice tractor but needs a rebuild. Shes still running and never been torn down and still used with the old brush hog on the farm, weved owned it since my grandpa traded a 56 chevy for it back in 1957.

Re: New to this forum, old salt otherwise,...
Wowsers! walts_restoration! How cool!
When I bought my JD, the owners were pull starting it. I rebuilt the magneto and it has been hand-starting ever since. Turn that flywheel slow until it pops, then give it a spin,...pop, pop, pop, and off it goes! Even in the dead of winter! 1942 and never been rebuilt! Just works when ever it's needed! Again, thanks to all of you for the nice welcome! I'd like to let y'all know that I have collected a number of vehicles, almost all of which I've rebuilt. I start with brakes and suspension, and work my way up. In highschool I had a '53 Stude that I hurt badly, rebuilt, and then knew too much! Put a 327 and BW T10 4spd in front of a 4.55:1 rear and ruled the streets of Ft Collins, CO,...1973. MANY years later (1992 and out of the Navy), I started with my '68 Mustang coupe, restored the '72 VW Superbeetle that we'd been driving for years, and salvaged and restored a '66 Mustang that was featured on Denver's Ch9 news (sold it after restoration to a doctor friend of mine). Snagged my '76 Camaro (that I commute with daily) and a '79 Fiat Spider 2000 conv. at about the same time in 2000 (both are restored, and the Camaro sports an identical 350 engine to the one I built for this truck,...410 ftlbs of torque and about 325 hp). I got my '69 Ford F100 from my dad-in-law for cheap (360 3spd with granny gear all original), and I FINALLY bought (for a stipend) the '88 Mazda RX-7 conv. 5spd That my dad bought with 10 miles on it in '88,...now with 44,610 original miles,...looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor! A couple need paint 'cause I haven't had time to get back to THAT chore, but all are in perfect running order, and most have new engines, are covered and housed. Gotta show off the '66 Mustang that I painted because of 911, prior to it's restoration,...it was my daily driver for over five years,...primer red for three before this: |

Re: New to this forum, old salt otherwise,...
Yo! Us old programmers,...sometimes we just get a method stuck in our heads! Lets try what Orange had directed in the first place! I have lots of pics!
This would be my 350 V8 and TH400 with the NP205 adapter: Next, my most recent upholtery job: I'll bore you no more with my test of how to properly place pics in the post except for one last pic,...of my '76 Camaro (quite altered!!) that I commute 40 miles/day to Ft Collins and back with: I AM proud of that one! Thank you for your indulgence. Todd. Last edited by asphaltburner; 07-31-2008 at 11:43 PM. |

Holy crap! There's a "DRUM BRAKE" club!!? My '72 VW Superbeetle has drum brakes! Swapped my '68 Mustang (and that '66) over to front discs so they could commute! Purchasing the front disc conversion for the bug this summer! Todd.
