Cam Question

ok i got this 400 sb im building and ive installed a lunati Bracket Master II cam. here are the specs

the duration is 292 he gross lift is 480 and the rpm range is between 2000 and 6000

so this may seem like a dumb question but the tranny i got is a th350 with a mild shiftkit in it

i dont think the converter is a stall

with this cam whould i need a stall converter??? before i put this thing together id like to find out so i dont have to pull the tranny again lol

i was told by some people here in town hot rodders and the machine shop this cam whould be ok. i dont know if ill evr run it on the strip but its going to be a street toy/hotrod

Re: Cam Question

Fwiw, I run a similar cam in my 350 (Xe-274h) and it's right on the edge of running while in gear with the stock converter. Took alot of screwing around to get it to work. Stall converter would probably be a good idea.

Re: Cam Question

I would say 1800-2200 would work fine, thats what i would've put in my truck. Doesn't it say anything on the lunati site?

Re: Cam Question

I've gotta 81 malibu with that same cam, 64cc small valve camel hump heads, and flat top pistons with valve reliefs in a 350. Dam good runnin motor, stock converter on a th350 and a 2:42 gear out back. For what I've got in it, it flies! I've used a stock converter in this car with this combo for over ten years.

Re: Cam Question

I have a similar cam in my hotrod.....with a stock converter. It's fine, but does wanna push through the brakes at idle....a 10" converter would be better.

Re: Cam Question

CrazyJesster,
I would go with the next one up from the one you asked about.

This one is only a little more money, and it will make a difference. The point of a "loose" converter is to allow the engine to quickly/easily get up to the RPM range where it makes its power. You originally stated that this cam was in the 2000-6000 range. It also removes some of the drag/load from the engine while it at idle. This makes it idle more "freely" like it is in neutral rather than like it is dragging a trailer.
Of course this is another one of those traps where, "more is better" comes into play. Don't fall for that either. If the converter is too loose, you end up with a lot of extra heat and fuel mileage waste from the constant slipping.
You really don't want to spend $99 on a converter that is too close to "stock" when another $30 or so will get you where you need to be. Remember, this is a truck, it is heavier than a car, which most of this stuff is intended for...
