250-6 ?'s
I have an 83 c-10 with a 250 w/integral head and a 4 speed, I'm thinking of having it rebuilt, what are some easy performance upgrades to do to it if i do have it redone. Are there parts for the 250? O i can pick up a 92 firebird with a 305 and auto trans for $200 would this be a better route

Re: 250-6 ?'s
Define better. It takes considerable work to put a FI V8 / auto in place of an L6/stick. Seach thru the board and you will find a lot of help. Depending on the 4 speed, it may not be difficult to put a carbed 350 or 305 in (it would take about $500 to do it here - 350's are cheap). Lots more HP at the price of fuel economy.
For the 250, with an integral head, there's not much basic you can do. If you change heads there are a lot of things you can do depending on what you want and $. #1, buy Leo Santucci's book. Easy upgrade, 307 pistons, little more cam, some rear gears are a big help. More $, earlier head, aftermarket intake an headers, carb, etc. More $, EFI. At this point, the cost of a mild 350 will be a lot less than your next steps with the L6. Don't get me wrong, I love 250's. But I drive like a little old lady and have no interest in dragging my old trucks or being able to boast about a bazillion HP. I just like to cruise at 62MPH in a big comfortable seat.

Re: 250-6 ?'s
I had the integrated head 250 in my truck... one good overheat left it with a 1 inch crack... Not fun.
The 350 transplant was easy, it was my first but I had a good idea of what I was doing and lot of experienced friends. 350 has been more fun for me. The six market never seemed to be much and is probably on its way out. Good luck though in whatever you decide to do. |

Re: 250-6 ?'s
the thing i would do is to get rid of the intergral head the regular kind were so much better and the seldom cracked when overheated

Re: 250-6 ?'s
i've got an 82 with the 250 not sure if it's the integral head.
i wanted to build on it, but i may just drive it the way it sits with some headers and fresh exhaust. there's only so much scratch to go around and it runs like a top. |

Re: 250-6 ?'s
if it's an 83 and the original engine, it's the integral head. No option for headers if I recall.

Re: 250-6 ?'s
Stick with the 6. I just pulled the 350 from my '75 and put in a 292 6cyl. Check out inliners.org, They have PLENTY of info there. Good luck. If your state emissions dont require you to have "ORIGINAL" equipment, then change to the NON integral head, intake and exhaust, and enjoy the six. EVERYWHERE you look, there is a V8......JMO

Re: 250-6 ?'s
I agree w/D13
just trans plant a V8, the cost is much better. And as for a L6 with an intergrated head ( like mine) nothing you can really do to it, unless you get a head thats not intergrated. then you have options,

Re: 250-6 ?'s
KEEP THE SIX! Easier to work on and there are aftermarket parts for them. Checkout the write ups at inliners.org
