where to find engine?

this is not a wtb ad but i'm wondering where to look for a v8 engine to put in my 79 swb c10. i would like to buy one running that i could just drop in and go but cant afford a crate. should i try junkyards in my area and see if they have a rebuildable v8 or where do ya'll get your engine needs? has anyone ever bought an engine off ebay?

you could try junkyards also try craigslist also try adds in the newspapers the classified adds section.

well junkyards you might find one that u can get. i know where i live texas at the local wreckin yard. buddy of mine got lucky an found a. good running one they pulled out of a wreck. that be a good place to look is junkyards could even rebuild it. at a decent price also check the local papers in the classified adds might get luck there too.

i find them in the papers here all the time but never have the darn money lol

i fargot what my buddy gave for that one. ive never bought one so not too sure. ive seen them in running shape the whole motor. for like 500 but thats around here. someone in your area might be different.

You are probably going to have to build it if you find one unless you change alot of stuff and use a newer one

You might have better luck looking for an entire car/truck. Find a junker with a good motor, get what you need and sell off the rest.

What he said. They're mostly gone where I'm at, but a good source for big blocks was 11 passenger station wagons. people would pay you to haul them away with a running 454 under the hood.

thx thump i'll let you know. do you ever go to moultrie? i try to go to both of them nov and feb. that's about 3 hrs from where i live.

i dont know how much i plan on spending tonloc i'm curious on how much a 350 or bigger should cost me that runs or needs rebuilding i know some engine builders but they usually expect you to bring them a block at least

The Moultrie swap meet days are the only 2 times a year that I forget about the rest of the world for a couple of days. No wife, kids or dogs . Just good old american Man stuff

350's are in abundance around here. You just have to look for them. The best advice from all has been to buy one relatively cheap and rebuild it to your specs. That way you know for sure you won't be stranded or stuck with a lemon. If you don't find one in your area. Try KNICO engines in moultrie(229-985-2100). They build motors for under a grand depending on what you want. I was gonna go that route but my buddy had a replacement lined up for me until I get my 427 installed. My old neighbor has two 350. Let me know or if you can hold out till november you could come up and look for yourself.

Other vehicles to find 350 and larger engines are pick-up trucks,vans,large trucks,school busses,even bread vans.
Most all of these were equiped with heavy duty engines which had 4-bolt mains,heavy duty cooling,alternators,4 barrel carbs,oil coolers, trans coolers,etc.
I go to Moultrie every fall to find parts for my projects.
BTW,I was born in Ozark,and have a lot of family there and surrounding areas.

The cheapest you can get a crate motor with a really good warranty is the 260HP Goodwrench 350. Around $1300.

Other than that, you can try and find used stuff but it is always a gamble. The best deal is to find one that someone is ready to pull out, but still has it in the vehicle and is willing to show you that it runs and drives.

you can buy a short block fro autozone advance or orreilly for about 6 or7 100 try calling jasper if you don't want to build one,most all shorts have a year and jasper you get what you want o rwhat your willing pay for

Visit your local engine shop. Sometimes they have engines that are not pickedup. Sometimes partially paid. Engine shops may ask for labor and any parts added only.

problem with autozone is they use the cheapest chinese internal parts they could find so the motor isnt worth a dime

I'll agree with that^ one, to an extent. I bought a newer (one piece main seal) 350 from Advance Auto, since I have a cousin who works there. My cousin and I installed it, and it never stopped burning oil. I went through about a quart a week. I warrantied it after about two months, which kind of sucked because they wouldn't give me all the money I should have gotten because I didn't have a professional do it. I did get a replacement engine, though. Anyhoo, once I got another one and got it installed professionally I haven't had a problem. It's been my daily for two years since then (75 miles roundtrip) until just here recently when gas prices started to head too far north.

My advice would be to get it installed professionally if you're going with an engine from Advance/Auto Zone/Oreillys.
