Having fits trying to make this brace fit!

This is the brace that runs from the steering column up to the cowl however I can not get it to fit in there. It seems to be about an inch too long.
There is a mystery to this part and I don't know the answer. I did the tear down on the truck and took all parts to the blaster. I don't remember removing this brace and when the truck came back the brace was removed and about 1.5 inches cut off from it. I welded it back but it won't fit. I can't say I didn't remove it when I did the tear down but I know for sure I didn't cut the end off.
I would appreciate some advice on this subject, a measurement of your brace and or pictures of where on the cowl it mounts.

I can only guess that you aren't putting enough 'angle' on the bracket. If you look @ your picture named motor, you will see 2 bolts above and inboard of the voltage reg. these are the bolts that are going thru the square holes of the bracket. the other end is the column support.

Yes I remember that piece on a '49 I used to own. It was a ***** to get out and I remember thinking it would be a bigger one trying to put it in. It has one end that is held in place at the firewall. I had to almost buckle the firewall and pull on the dash to get it out. I'd sooner cut it in 2 and weld it back together inplace.

Andy:
I have tried every angle it just doesn't want to fit. It seems to be about 1 or 1.5 inches too long. When I place the bottom end up where it is supposed to go at the steering column the other end won't straighten out even at the top of the cowl. I'm about ready to cut some off of it. But it just doesn't make sense why it won't fit.

Cajun:
I would do the same but I'm afraid it might be really needed to brace the dash and firewall.

Re: Having fits trying to make this brace fit!

this may help. if you enlarge this pic you can see how it is mounted in my '50. the firewall does not need it for bracing but the dash might.

Re: Having fits trying to make this brace fit!

Got it in finally. I had to bend the firewall end back about an inch to make it fit. Thanks guys for all the suggestions.
