Upper control arm disassembely
Hey guys:
This question is not truck related actaullay, although the truck ones should be the same, therefore moderators please feel free to move it to proper place. I just didn't know where else to post it. Anyways, it is about a Nova. How do you take upper control arms apart to change the bushings after you takr thrm off of the car? Do you have to press the bushing out first? You know I am talking about the middle section of the upper control arm which bolts into the subframe. I hope I explained it right. Thanks in advance.

The nuts are removed from the ends of the control arm shaft. The bushings are then pressed out of the a-arm & off of the shaft. For bottom arms on cars, the bushings are just pressed out of the a-arm.

This may sound stupid but how can you press out the bushing with the shaft in place? I have 20 ton shop press but nor much experience.

Not really because the shaft kind of gets in the way. I usually use an air chisel to wedge between the bushing shell & the a-arm working around the entire bushing a little @ a time. Once the first one is out, the shaft will come out & you could use your press on the second if you have the necessary adapters. Be careful because the stamped a-arms will collapse if you're not careful w/the press.
