BIG problem
I just got my dropped spindles and disk brakes from CPP, and they push the tires out 1 1/2". Is this normal? The only reason I kept the six lug pattern was because I already have wheels and tires. CPP is trying to figure it out, I sent them pictures too. My truck is a 70 GMC 1/2 Ton, and so far I've replaced the ball joints with 73-87, and the spindles and rotors are for the same year, but with a six lug pattern. Do I need to change something else, like the control arms? Or did I just get the wrong parts?

Re: BIG problem
Yikes! The disc conversion does push them out a little, and the drop spindles are known to move them out a little as well- but 1.5"? That seems like a lot. Maybe the combination of discs and drop spindles create a large offset. No suggestions from me except maybe different backspacing.
Maybe CPP will come through this time...

Re: BIG problem
I've heard 1.5" total
but 3" total seems like alot. will your wheels work with the track being that much wider?

Re: BIG problem
No, the tires come out even with the outside of the fender. I was thinking about making new control arms, but I would think shortening them 2 inches would REALLY mess up the geometry. Redesigning the whole suspension sounds fun but I don't want to do that unless I have to.

Re: BIG problem
This question has been posted before atleast to an extent. I never measured mine like you did and my parts came from GMC Paul and were McGaughys spindles. Anyway I felt mine was pushed out quite a bit also. My wheels are out more than I wanted also like you I am using what I originally had.
Good luck on the solution. There are some companies that make the narrower a-arms that might help? Dave

Re: BIG problem
I have drop spindles and disc conversion on my truck. That sounds about right to me, when I went to 20" wheels i had to get 1-1/2" spacers out back because they had too much offset. Up front I was fine.

Re: BIG problem
Well, I think CPP should of at least mentioned that. This whole thing has kindof left a bad taste in my mouth for them. I actually have another set of drop spindles from a previous project. They are from an 81 light duty. The first time I called them I specifically asked if their rotors would work on them, and he assured me that they would. When I got the rotors, they wouldn't work, so I called them back and he said "he never told me they would work on my spindles, But hey we got the right spindles if you want to buy them". So like an idiot I went ahead and bought them, and now heres yet another problem I think I should have been told about. And now he says "oh you gotta buy these other spindles that are another $100, plus all the shipping to return the wrong ones and get the new ones." Iritating. So now I'm not really sure what to do.

Re: BIG problem
I just got a set of 6 lug rotors from ccp. I am using stock 71 spindles. I will do a mock-up this weekend and get back to you with my findings.

Re: BIG problem
So were these conversion spindles? or spindles designed to work with later model a arms?

Re: BIG problem
I bought CCP drop spindles and disk brake conversion for my 61. But im using stock a-arms. It had a little paper in it that said it may increase track width. I didnt notice much but didnt measure either, my stock tires are still way inside the fender.
In the end would you rather have good brakes or the original width? As my dad always tells me "Building a custom car always involves changes you may not have thought about. If you want it to be easy leave it stock" Not to be an ash-hole, it just comes with the territory.

Re: BIG problem
As far as I've ever read, if you're using the stock truck style a-arms/crossmember & swapping from drums to disc brakes, the track width increases. It doesn't matter whose spindle you use. GM, Bell Tech, CPP, or ECE etc.... they all increase the track width unless they're custom designed not to.

I'm curious about anyone w/ ece if they measured before and after. Scoti your comment makes sense and I'm curious if others have had issues w/ other companies or if CPP is the only one that's noticably wider? |

Re: BIG problem
ok at the risk of going off topic or getting flamed for man-crushing I thought I heard somewhere that there was this really cool aftermarket drop cross-member thingy that while a little bit of an investment grade piece was well worth the price of admision AND narrows the track width. Peanut Butter Built or something like that. If you're already getting in the spirit of throwing money at your truck it really is a good choice part.
Personally I'm waiting for the new front and rear DONKmembers so I can fit my 40" wheels with 25 series tires. Josh Now back to your regularly scheduled post.

Re: BIG problem
I know a company that uses the stock spindles, and mounts the rotor to the spindle, Crussen Classics, I bought the set up before all the other companys were offering anything for a conversion, or for stock six bolt spindles, the track width doesn't increase at all, that's my 2 cents
