What is the condition of the block? Heads and cam swap provide the biggest gains. Only turbos or supercharges provide more.

Re: I need more power

well i guess the first question is what size motor you running? along with your cam, timing chain, and lifters, you could swap the intake for a better breathing one, bigger/better jetted carb, add headers, larger plug wires, "open" 3" air cleaner, If you really wanted to spend some $$$$ then take it out, punch it .30 over, deck the heads, or go with some aluminum ones, port and polish, balance blueprint it, source out some 202 double hump heads, change the rocker arms, then after your making all that horsepower you need to focus on the rest of the drive line, tranny, rear end, and please dont forget to do something with the brakes, and suspension bushings, tie rods, ball joints, and all that jazz, you know make sure the truck can not only handle the extra power but also be able to stop it too. Let us know what you goal is and we will try to lead you down the right path.

Sorry if I missed in a previous thread, but can you fill us in on what you have for an engine, heads, intake, what you want out of it, and most importantly how much you want to spend?

K.I.S.S....Start with the basics and learn as you go. While you may have the passion for a twin turbo kit, I sense that you don't have the knowledge, or the funds to make that a reality any time soon.

What rear gears do you have? If you are running 3.08's or higher, a gear change will make a huge difference. Adding an OD transmission will give you a lower first gear as well as the advantage of OD to help improve mileage.

Slow down a bit and look at what is realisticlly in your budget. Then consider what you and your Dad can accomplish together. Work on small projects and eventually you will see big gains.

In the meantime print a picture of that twin turbo kit and hang it on the wall. That's will provide motivation for you to work hard and learn a lot and enjoy the dream.

Best information you can get right there.

Just throwing parts on an engine is a great way to get dissapointed with the results. Its how those parts work together that will give you RL gains. Ask yourself what is your realistic final goal. XXXhp daily driver or XXXhp trailer queen. good luck!

Re: I need more power

I am not trying to smash your dream here, but doing a Carb turbo motor is one of the hardest to do for fuel metering purpose, The type of boost controler in that is a what they call an Manual Boost Controller (MBC) you turn the boost up with a click at a time and down a click at a time, the thing about boost is it must be controlled, and those types are unreliable. You will want an EBC from Greedy, APC, or simular. Plus like running Nitro you have to build your motor for it. When you build a turbo motor you build it sort of opposite than you would normally build an engine for power. I just put together a turbo motor for my carb honda, (87 CRX) When I told the machine shop they said you want to take off as little as possible from the head. Also you will need to change your pistons to a set of Forged ones not cast. Also along with turbo setups you need to have everything controlled together or your going to end up with a basket full of bent/broken parts. There are alot of street beasts out there that are a simple carb applications. Go to the drag track one weekend and walk the pits and you will see that on a given budget you can build horsepower that is reliable. Not to mention without the head aches. As you grow then you can grow into the turbo setup. I am not bashing please dont take it that way but as what was already said learn to build and tune the engine for power and then when you get knowledge about the base engine build then add the turbos, and then use those to feed a supercharger....plus nitro, alchol,.......... (last part said with evil grin rubbing hands together) Ok Mr. Taylor?

Re: I need more power

If you are asking questions about a Cam kit, a twin Turbo setup is about 4 times as complicated.

You need to start with a budget and some realistic goals for the truck and plan the whole truck around it. If you really plan to add Twins, you need to realize this dictates your cooling choices, exhaust choices/routing, engine component choices, transmission/drive train choices, etc. Being fast in nice, but if you can't drive it unless you are using racing gas, what fun is that...

I planning a Twin setup, and the turbo purchase is the easiest part, one of the most expensive, but easiest.

Re: I need more power

plus on a carb set up you also need to fab a carb "box" to seal the carb up....I agree with captkaos, it is very tricky to set one up.

Re: I need more power

Adding a Carb to the mix instead of EFI moves the 4X as hard up to about 8X's.

You are a bigger man than I am CNC, but I HATE carbs I would never trust it on a street driven vehicle not to do an instantaneous meltdown.

Re: I need more power

Keep it STOCK!

I have a beast 383 in my S-10 with throw you against the seat performance. I have a bone stock 250-6 in my stepper, I drive the stepper and leave the S-10 in the garage. Big motors are fun but can be a PIA to drive and maintain.

Re: I need more power

What is your main goal? also is this your daily driver, if so how many miles do you put on it every day. my suggestion is after the cam kit you need to address the rest of the truck. you need to make sure the brakes are good for one, how is the suspension components? upper and lower ball joints? tie rods? A-arm bushings? then the rear bushings, gears, brakes, axles? Tires.....Springs.....If you want a street beast then make sure that you can handle her and she isnt fighting herself or going to get you killed because you cant stop. Proper suspension set up is just as important to making power get to the ground as the bigger motor it takes to put it there. Post some pics of this future street beast so we know what we are looking at here.
