Re: Broke My Front Axel... Any Ideas

From your pictures that appears to be a 1977 Chevrolet Dana 44, Any Chev/GMC Dana 44 from 1971 to 1978 or 79 parts will fit,
I have been told some of the later (1979-83) 10 bolt parts will interchange too but can not confirm that.

Re: Broke My Front Axel... Any Ideas

If it's a 8 lug the outer axle stub shafts will be different too, make sure he gets the right one, shouldn't be hard at all.

Re: Broke My Front Axel... Any Ideas

bad thing is that you have to pull the wheel, then lock-outs, then brake caliper, then hub, then spindle and then get the spindle off (that's the hard part). Then do that again in the junkyard and put it all back together... If you can find a matching dana 44 3/4 ton axle (8 lugs) then buy the whole thing (maybe $150?). Do all the work at home and keep the extra parts.

A newer 10 bolt won't work because the inner axle is different (length and spline count) so you have to find a Dana44 3/4 ton.

Or you could buy replacement axles and U-joints $$$ http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog...axleshafts.htm

Try not to spin those front tires so much unless you go up to a Dana 60 ($900).

Re: Broke My Front Axel... Any Ideas

i always see posts on here saying a 10 bolt shaft won't work in a 44. in an emergency,(read trail riding this weekend),they will work! i've done it personally. the 10 bolt is shorter but only by a few fractions. i just leave out the outward most c-clip because the outer stub shaft is just shy of reaching. it has never hurt anything on mine. as far as spline count, i'm not sure on that but in my eyes, if the shaft goes in & the wheel pulls in 4x4, the spline count must be the same. lol

Re: Broke My Front Axel... Any Ideas

nope.. 10 bolt is 28 spline and dana 44 is 30 spline inner axles.... outer axles are the same...

I wouldn't think that a front axle would constitute an emergency that grinds your differental to shreds... but it's your truck...
