WTB Seat Belts- 79 Chevy

I need the full set of seat belts for a 79 Chevrolet regular cab. Color needs to be crimson red, which is similar to burgandy, just a little brighter red. The truck is low mileage and the seat belts themselves are extremely nice, but the the plastic housings for all of the belts are brittle and breaking up, like it was very poor quality plastic on the day they were made.
Unless I'm overlooking something, I don't know of any way to use the old belts and insert them into new plastic housings.
Anyway, looking for a really nice complete set of crimson red seat belts for my 79. Thanks. Lane............

I have a 77 Burb that I am parting out and the belts are red, not sure the color you want. Will see about posting pics to see if you can tell the color.

Re: WTB Seat Belts- 79 Chevy

you can replace just the plastic on the belts, if you'd like, I could take pictures of mine to show you...you may have to get an upholstery shop to sew up one belt so you can get the plastic off because the belts make a loop, but that's not that big of a deal...

Now that is definitely something I'm interested in, but don't understand what
you're referring to yet. Can you send pics? Thanks.

Re: WTB Seat Belts- 79 Chevy

I don't have pics right now, but I'll try to explain the best I can and if you still don't understand, I'll get some pics tomorrow when it's light out...

I'm assuming your truck has three point seatbelts but the doors...if they are, then what's needed to change the plastic out is to take the belt on the upperside of the buckle and cut the threads from the factory...then you will be able to slide the rear pillar mount off of the belt and then slide the plastic off the belt...to install the plastic it's just the opposite...and have the upholstery shop make sure they put the rear pillar mount on correctly...it may help for them to do one at a time so they have a model to look at if there are any questions...also make sure they sew the belt back together will matching thread and bobbin and that they sew it in a factory pattern so it all matches the other belts and seams...in the process, in order to take the plastic off the belt mechanism, you will either need to drill out a couple of pop rivets and then reinstall new ones in the new plastic, or you will have to pry the plastic off the mechanism...the frame for the mechanism may have metal tabs sticking off of it that the plastic has holes in it that go over the tabs...if I had a picture of your belts, I could tell you exactly how to do it...

now if you are talking about the inner belts with the latch on them that's easier...there should be a seam or staple about halfway down the plastic and you just need to take the staple out or cut the seam and change the plastic and then stitch it back up whether it has a staple or not...the new seam should be no bigger than the staple or the old seam...it is just there to hold the belts in the right position in the plastic sleeve, it holds no weight or pressure...

I have a full set, but they are not "bright RED", the factory outside was "Carmine red". Here is a pic of the interior. I do nnot have a close up of the belts at the moment, but let me know if the interior is close to the color you need and I will take/ post pics of the belts.

Color looks correct. Can you send me some closeup pics of the seatbelts?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the plastic on mine is pretty well shot too. I am now thinking I will see if I can use the 3 point set up in my 72 Cheyenne build.

WIDESIDE72,

Speed.
If they are in very good condition, I'm interested. Can you take a couple of close-up pictures of the seat belts for me? Thanks.

There seems to be a pattern here with all of them being cracked. Appreciate you checking on it and responding. I'll keep searching. Thanks.

SanitysBane,
I'm still looking, especially if you have a set in carmine red or something very close that is in great condition. If so, send me some pics of what you have for sale. Thanks. Lane

Re: WTB Seat Belts- 79 Chevy

Tony's upholstery in tyler just changed the webbing in my seatbelt retractors from brown to black since black seat belts are hard to find. If you find the plastics he can replace them on your seatbelts with factorylike stitching.

Tony used to work at wallace upholstery. He parted ways and started his own shop on the side street right in front of higginbotham engine service on erwin street. He does great work.
