Transfercase won't shift?

I believe my truck has an NP205, but it is stuck in 4 low, it worked a couple years ago, but it's a plowtruck so it doesn't need to be in anything BUT 4low.... How do you think I can get it to shift?

Re: Transfercase won't shift?

Being that you are in NY where the roadsalt gets almost as deep as the snow I suspect the shift lever pivot at the tcase adapter is badly rusted and seized up. You will need to crawl under it and see if you can loosen the pivot bolt and remove it in order to lube it up. Yours may even have a grease zirk on the pivot bolt. If it does, pump as much grease in there as you can and keep wiggling the shifter. I really doubt it is anything internal to the tcase. If the tcase actually turns out to be a 203 then start lubing up the floor shifter mechanism on the underside of the truck.

Re: Transfercase won't shift?

Does it feel like the lever won`t budge or like it wants to move but something is holding it?The pivot could br froze from rust as Larry mentioned.Or,the case is in a bind.Have you tryed backing while you try to shift,Then forward, then back...?I`ve had one bind up and I broke the pivot bolt just from binding. That was on pavement.A transfer case should never be left in one mode for too long of a period. The same for lock-out hubs.

Does it pull backward easy or hard?

Re: Transfercase won't shift?

Well, there was no garage space and it was raining, so I fixed this problem differentky. I just got in the truck, fired it up and yanked the T/C shifter hardcore. It works fine now, 4L 4H and 2H. Thanks.
