1968 GMC 4x4 Conversion
I have a 1968 GMC 2500 Custom with a big block 396 and Th400 trans I was wondering is it possible to convert my 2wd to a 4x4 I have a dana 60 rear and was thinking of getting a 60 or a 44 for the front depending on if I could find the 60 if it is possible has any one ever done it? and if so what all would need to be changed to accomplish this?

Re: 1968 GMC 4x4 Conversion
This can be done but in all likelihood you would be better off to find a 4x4 doner truck. on the front you need the springs and perches along with the shackles. You can use your T400 but the main shaft will have to be replaced and you will need the adapter and the transfer case plus modifying your drive shaft and a few other minor things. I went to a 208 on mine but the original 205 is a stronger unit. All in all I would recommend you find a 4x4 doner truck.

Re: 1968 GMC 4x4 Conversion
your going to have a hard time finding the output shaft, adapter and a t-case to retrofit your th400 to a np205... Im not entirely sure whats involved but I think it would be much easier to get a th350/np205, or a sm465/np205 setup and use that. You'll also spend a fortune buying those parts unless you stumble upon a deal of a lifetime.
Also, a Dand 60 is unneccesary in most cases, and also will be a huge money pit. Where as a rebuilt Dand 44 will most likely suit you just fine. Overall, I think it would be much easier to get a 4x4 donor frame with running gear already there. Here in Nebraska you can pick up a frame with axles for a couple hundred bucks, and a trans/ tcase setup for nut to much more. seems much easier to me than moving motor mounts, swapping crossmembers, putting spring perches on, getting a t-case and drivehsaft set up... ect. The frames are still diffrent also, even tho your GMC should have leafs in the back the rear section of the frame rail isnt straight, and a true K frame is. Not a big deal but it is diffrent.
