71 3/4 without Lockouts
I recently purchased a 71 3/4 4x4 as a parts truck. A tree had fallen on the bed and pretty much destroyed the bed. The frame looks tweaked as well. Anyway, the truck does not have locking hubs. I assumed that the front axle must have been swapped at some time for a later model fulltime 4x4 unit even though the owner who had owned the truck for 20+ years claimed that it was the original axle.
I recently read somewhere on the board that this was a way that these trucks could be outfitted originally. Does anybody know if it is possible that a 71 4x4 could come from the factory without the locking hubs?

Re: 71 3/4 without Lockouts
Hi Breeh
The full time hubs have always been standard and the lockout hubs were an option from 1959 to 72. I'm not sure when they changed but it might have been 73. If I remember right the lockout hubs were about a $75 option and are always listed on the SPID label for the 66 to 72's. Mark

Re: 71 3/4 without Lockouts
You got slugs?
Like Mark said, that`s standard equipment and lockouts were an option. It`s like alot of options everyone gets making the standard equipment the exception(like a/c or automatic trans).Plus, pretty much all the ones that didn`t order lockouts originally installed them somewhere along the line by now. It means all the driveline parts were turned by the wheels when in 2wd.More drag and wear.

Re: 71 3/4 without Lockouts
But......alot stronger out on the trail! And no L/O hub to get knocked off by a rock, or a stump, or another truck. :-)

Re: 71 3/4 without Lockouts
personally i've never seen a K/10 - K/20 without locking hubs but since they are listed on the SPID i asssumed they were an optional item.

Re: 71 3/4 without Lockouts
Here's a couple pictures of some 73 model non locking hubs. Am I correct in assuming that they are locked one hundred percent all the time?

Re: 71 3/4 without Lockouts
Yes.You have the wheels turning the drivetrain up to through to the Transfer case output. As mentioned,it`s the strongest deal and no problems with staying lubed.
