How to tighten up bags for cornering?

Alright, so I've come to the conclusion that I need valves for each bag. I have valves for the front and rear, and the truck really leans when I corner because of the transfer of air between bags. So, how much will the bags resist leaning if I get valves for each? I also need a sway bar in the front, which I assume will help this problem out. I like to run low, and this causes the bags to be pretty low on pressure. What have you guys done to tighten it up? I'm not looking for corvette-like cornering, just no more leaning!

Re: How to tighten up bags for cornering?

Just add 1 fill and 1 dump on each bag. Then install a sway bar. That should make a world of difference!

Re: How to tighten up bags for cornering?

First thing is get a sway bar. Get an 1 1/8" off of a 3/4 ton truck or an aftermarket unit. It WILL make a difference. Next, is get at least two more valves to isolate your front. It would be best to isolate all corners but you def want to stop air transfer up front.

I have never done it, but I have been told that trimming, or removing your cups (assuming you have front cups) will allow you to go lower. Consequently it will take more air to ride low so your bags should have more pressure and not be so squishy.

Re: How to tighten up bags for cornering?

Thanks guys! I figured that is what I would have to do. As a info note, I get more looks with the truck bagged than I do with my Corvette! That is no joke...there are so many guys that come up and tell me that it reminds them of a '67-72 that they have/had. Here is a pic of it a few weeks ago here in Utah.

Re: How to tighten up bags for cornering?

I've heard put the valves as close to the bag as possible, or directly ontop if possible, because it will keep the air from going back into the line under hard cornering rather than staying in the bag.

Or you can install check valves at each bag to help with the weight/air transfer.

8 valves, 1.25" bar up front, Helwig style or late Camaro rear bar and you be grinnin from ear to ear. Cut cups and good shocks wouldn't hurt either. That's the setup I ran for some time on my 69 Burb. It held the road pretty well considering it was a 2 ton rig with a 127" wheelbase.

Re: How to tighten up bags for cornering?

Thanks for the compliments on the truck! I've decided to get eight valves and definitely a sway bar. I have a lot of hp going through the truck and it would be nice to stay in the throttle around some corners instead of slamming the breaks and feeling like I'm in a '72 Cadillac.

Do you guys know if the supertrack bar from ECE is all I need back there? I've got that now, so I'm not sure if there is somehing else to go back.

About how much power you go i would think about bigger brakes if its a lot.

The track/panhard bar does not provide any anti-roll/sway. All it does is keep the rearend centered (or close to it). There are sway bars you can install in the back for anti-sway that are totally seperate/different than a track bar.

Search this forum for "Camaro Rear" or "Rear Sway"

A nice set of shocks will make a world of difference. It's incredible the difference when you switch from a Monroe or KYB to a Bilstein. Bilstein has a new line of shocks meant specifically for air ride. After putting them on a few vehicles, I won't run anything but on a vehicle of my own.

Re: How to tighten up bags for cornering?

No. Bilstein's site doesn't have much on it. I've been playing with them for a while and I like them. I could probably answer some questions based on experience. RCD Suspensions has Bilstein build them specifically for them.

So is RCD who you get yours through, or do deal with Bilstein direct?

I get them through RCD since Bilstein makes the shocks for them. Bilstein doesn't sell them to anyone else from what I understand. I am an authorized distributor for them, but they still come from RCD. I have a chart at the shop with a breakdown of them. I will try to remember to grab a picture of it. It's basically just a Bilstein shock with valving designed for air ride. It's more progressive than your standard shocks. Since the air bag gets softer when the pressure is released, these get more firm as they compress more.

I sent Steve an email, he said he created a page on their site recently for the air ride shocks. He sent me this link, so this should be all the info you need.

Re: How to tighten up bags for cornering?

Nice link. I did Bilsteins on my 68. The rears required using 88-98 rear shocks w/some driveway made bracketry. One of those p/n's would have been much easier.....

If you dont have the cash for everything right now START with the sway bar... My 64 only has front and rear control and did not have a sway bar... I would start blowing the rockers off of it going through corners lol... I called ADDCO and ordered a sway bar and it is great now... A world of difference! I have a set of valves I bought and haven't put them on yet just because it handles great with the sway bar..
