I decided to make a thread on my truck project and update as I go. Let's begin. A few weeks ago I was wondering through the local junkyard, looking at all the old rot boxes (I live in NY). I was about to leave, then I spotted this old thing:

This truck was like no other here, becuase in a place full of rotted floorboards, trunk lids and frames, this truck was SOLID. The floors are solid, cab corners and outer rockers are recent, all around the windshiled is solid, like many other 60-66 weren't. Wow. This truck is buildable. I go talk to the guy that owns it, he said he'd sell it to me, a 17 year old kid looking for something to tinker on, for $300. Maybe being a punk kid helped me out there..... The deal was done, I hauled it out of there for $275, and payed $75 for a tow.

What it needs:
Everything. Exterior body stuff is a mess, the bed is gone, doors are shot, hood is rotted and grille support + inner fender are too. None of the lights work. There is no brake pressure, might be attriburted to the leaking wheel cylinders I stubled upon. The right rear wheel was locked, so I cut the lugs off, then I couldn't for the life of me pry the drum off, so I torched it. I'll need one of those.

Goals: I'm going to replace all of the rotted crap with decent used stuff, get lights and brakes functional, and then we'll see how close to a truck we are then. I'd like it to be an occasional driver, hopefully by next year. I'd like to keep the 230 I6, 3 on the tree for now because it runs suprisingly well, but if money allows, something along the lines of a 350/T5 are in its future. I might even do a disc brake swap.... My budget is low becuase I work part time, howver I have lots of time to wrench on it for the same reason.

As of now, I'm looking to get some body parts. I have a line on a 66 Chevy hood, straight with only some rust on the inside of the hood, what do you think that's worth? I also have a line on a 67-72 step side bed, with fenders and without a tailgate for $250.... Gonna have to check that one over. I just bought a set of wheels for the old girl, the rusty steel ones just aren't my taste:

I will update as I go, and keep track of what I have into this junker. Not much work will get done right now, it's about 10 degrees F out right now.

Welcome! Ah, another GMC...my favorite. I like the aluminum slot wheels - I'm kinda partial to that style.

Haven't been able to work on the truck, it's out in the driveway and its 10 degrees here, not a favorable combination..... I am however going to look at a 67-72 step side bed on friday, guy claims its pretty solid and is looking to get $250 for it, so we'll see what that one looks like...

Rear drums for the GMC are different than those for a chevy. If you need part numbers on the GMC rear drums, send me a message and I will look up the numbers that I have for them.

Here's a previous message on the drums for a GMC:

I have two part numbers you can try for rear 6 lug GMC brake drums. The first is a Wagner BD 60089. The second is Allsafe 2067 DGS.

I used the Allsafe from Autozone. It is for a later model (I think 67-72) truck with 4 wheel drive. It has fins on the outside unlike the original that is smooth. The only modification that I had to make was to drill the 6 lug holes from 1/2" to 9/16" so that the drum would fit on the shoulders on the rear lugs like the original. This drum had the right offset unlike the Chevy drums.

The Wagner was a number that I got from another member of the 6066gmcguy.org site. I haven't used that one, but was told it was a direct match to the original (a bit pricey, though is what I remember).

I hope this helps with those looking for rear 6 lug GMC rear drums.

Thanks Steve, will need to get that in the future. I went and looked at the 67 stepside bed, I think I'm gonna go pick it up soon.... It's very solid and $200 ain't bad.....

I got the wheels from a friend who has a 67 SWB and is moving to 17" Torq Thrusts..... Good deal on those for sure. I love the slots!!!!

I must be missing something here..... The stepside beds are the same.... maybe you're talking about the fenders being different? I will use correct fenders, but the box is pretty much identical I believe.

The box is basically the same but the steps and fenders are both different. You will also have to drill new holes for the 60/66 style fenders and weld up the original holes.

Yeah, it makes sense now, the guy has 2 step beds, one with fenders and one without, the one with fenders is a little nicer, has paint but he wants $400. I dont have that. The guy has a ton of 67-72 parts, a complete 67 front clip for $300 too.... If I was building a 72 I'd have the guy on speed dial. Come to thinik of it, I'm going to tell him about this site when I go to pick it up.

Gave my friends S10 a workout today! Got that bed and set it down on my frame. The mounts are close, so it will be easy to put on. Just need fenders now.
