Pardon my ignorance!
I just got a urethane dash pad from Dashes Direct for my '85 C30. It's black. My interior is blue. I was planning on dyeing it, but the new dash had a slip of paper with a warning "Do not try to dye/paint this dash!" They say it won't adhere. Anybody tried it anyway? I'm inclined to leave it black, but I'm not real happy about it.
Another thing: Almost all of the plastic studs snapped off of the trim panel. I couldn't get the speed nuts to budge, but the slightest pressure would snap the studs off. Now I'm left trying to figure out how to attach it to the new dash pad. I'm thinking double-sided adhesive tape? I suppose I could buy a new trim piece, but I'm wondering if most of the replacement stuff available is junk. All help and opinions appreciated! |

Re: Pardon my ignorance!
I painted a black dash. I used a special primer before painting. Other than hard nicks, it's held up really well. The edges near the door are locations to not nick.

Was it a Dashes Direct pad G?? Those pieces of crap cannot be dyed...they are too flexible/flimsy and the paint will crack like an easter egg.

Re: Pardon my ignorance!
depending on how far down your studs snapped.......turn the nut over, and tighten with a pair of pliers, just snug it up and it will be good.

Re: Pardon my ignorance!
DO NOT attempt to dye it. They put that warning in there for a reason. It WILL NOT adhere.

Re: Pardon my ignorance!
Don't Dye it. It won't stick. This along with a few other reasons is why I don't sell these.

Re: Pardon my ignorance!
Capt will set ya up, get one from him and dye to your hearts content, just use the right materials AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER. If Capt don't have it and you go LMC, make danm sure you order the OEM pad. If you don't you'll be sorry. Mine is OEM and I had trouble with that, not to mention it's pricey. jim

Re: Pardon my ignorance!
I only advertise the Original GM ones on the site, but I have a few Dash Direct vinyl skinned ones on hand but can get them, you just have to let me know.

Re: Pardon my ignorance!
I have a urethane dash pad in my '89 crew cab. I agree on the fact that it's a hunk of crap. The color looks good,... but the fit is not worth your time. I'll be installing a nice OEM dash when I find a deal on one.
