Bed wood + clearcoat question
Hey guys, looking for a little feedback here. I've heard of people using automotive clearcoat over the color stain. For the most part, spar urethane looks great and has excellent durability, but.... it also has a goldish tint to it. In my case, i'm using a black stain (Minwax Ebony to be exact) and i'm not too keen on the goldish tint that it gives once applied over the ebony stain on my test boards. Seems that on all other colors, it richens the appearance of the stain. But not to my liking on the black.
Whats the 411 on using auto clearcoat. I'm concerned about compatability since the stain is oil-based. Please advise!!

Re: Bed wood + clearcoat question
I've seen it done and it looked good Chris. Here's some info for you if you haven't seen it. http://www.mar-k.com/final_summary.html I used Helmsman and sanded all the edges smooth before I applied it.

Re: Bed wood + clearcoat question
We use automotive clear over a urethane finish but not just over the stain. I would seal the wood and stain with a quality urethane sealer and then after its dried apply the automotive clear in gloss,semi-gloss or whatever. LIke said go to Mar-k and see their instructions and tests.
