Is it ok to leave a v8 in the six cylinder position???

Any info appreciated. . .

I used mine like that for many years because I wasn't comfortable with how close the distributor was to the firewall. The only thing I noticed was a slight weight shift towards the front. Also, my drive shaft yoke was engaging the 350 transmission by only 1-1/2 inches.

On my next rebuild I'm thinking of moving the mounts back about 1 to 1-1/2 inch and redrilling the bolt holes. That will still give me plenty of clearance on dis and shift the weight more to the back.

You mean when the V8 is mounted back in the 6cyl position?Where the transmission is in the position for a 6cyl,right?.Yes,it`s ok.I don`t,I always set a V8 forward so it`s not all stuffed back into the firewall and sits the way the factory did.

The only thing I have noticed is in that position with a single core radiator is the truck seems to run a little warmer, if you don't have a fan shroud. Everything else on mine has been great.

So let me get this right...Its ok for the 8 to sit in the 6 position? I am getting ready to this swap. I have everything to do it...but dont want to rip everything apart.

I've done the 230-I6 to 350-V8 swap on my 64 C10. My truck is a 3-speed manual, and I left both the engine mounts and the bellhousing side mounts in the original, I6 location. Works like a charm. Distributor is a little tight to the firewall, but no big deal.

You shouldn't have any problems other than being snug with the dist. I used a 4x4 fan shroud which fit nicely and ran fairly cool...

that's where the small block goes on a 4X4... you'll be fine.

My 283 is mounted in the 6 cyl position. A bit close on the dizzy but there is enough clearance. I have driven mine like this to TN, CO, Kansas City, and hundreds of miles in between with no problems. I installed an electric cooling fan so I don't have any issues with the shroud/fan. I also have the HEI dizzy which is a bit larger than the points or other ones. Have about 1/4" between the firewall and the cap. As long as your motor mounts are good, you shouldn't have any problems.

Sorry left words out. That's what happends when you get old and get distracted...

I mentioned the weight shift and drive shaft problem in case you decide to move it forward to give you more clearance. I had the original 6 cylinder front springs and someone mentioned to me that there was a difference between those and the V8 springs when they came out.

Makes sense why the 4x4 shroud works better.(I learn something on here every day)

I ran headers on my V8 in the I6 position. Had to run the Z-bar for the clutch thru the header, between 5 & 7. Ran like that for nearly 100K until some lady felt like shortening my '72 by pulling out in front of me...

OK, since we're on the topic, I am also doing a I6 to V8 conversion and a 3spd manual to TH350 swap. Already took out mid-mount crossmember. I thought someone said on here to swap the I6 perches(left to right, right to left) and put them in the front holes. I tried that, doesn't line up. Do I have to bend the bottom of the perch to get it to line up with the holes on the crossmember? Since I'm doing a complete swap, I want the 350 in the front holes and I'll install the tranny crossmember where it lines up with the trans. Or just search the boneyard for V8 mounts already in front holes, that way I know I'll get the right ones. Sorry to bust in on your dilemma, just that I had a similar question and no sense posting a new thread for the same topic.
