What transfer case is in truck?

Getting a 83 Chevy lwb 4x4 that I will be parting out and I was wondering if anyone knew which transfer case came stock in this truck? It has a 700R4 auto trans and locking hubs.

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks.

Scott

Re: What transfer case is in truck?

Thanks Walt.

I had a 79 K10 a while back, that had constant 4 wheel drive which used a NP208. This one has the locking hubs so it's not constant (my understanding).

Re: What transfer case is in truck?

I don't doubt these gentelmen, but you might want to duck under the truck and look at the tag on the back of the transfer case, it has the number right out in plain sight. No telling what one of the PO's did to it. jim

Re: What transfer case is in truck?

The old full time 4x4 truck would have had an NP203 in it. Most 81+ trucks have a 208 in them, but the odd unit still had a 205

Re: What transfer case is in truck?

im pretty sure the 203s were full time, and the 208s were part time. 205s and 208s are similar, except the 208s are aluminum and a slightly lower gear.

Re: What transfer case is in truck?

Should be a Np 208. Should be but u never know what someone could have done before you. Odds are Np208 tho. And the 4x4 full time would have been an Np203.

Re: What transfer case is in truck?

I hope I'm not stealing a thread here, but I believe the 208's and 203's are both a chain driven xfer case, and the 205 is the only one that is gear driven.

Re: What transfer case is in truck?

It WILL be a 208, unless the previous owner swapped it out.

The 208 is an aluminum chain driven case with a 2.61 low

205 is cast Iron gear to gear with a 1.91? low

203 is full time, cast iron, gear to gear case. These are convertable to part time though

A 241 is the same as a 208, slightly stronger chain, and a 2.71 low gear

The only trucks to get a 205 instead of the 208/241 were one tons. The 241 started in 89? With a mechanical speedo, then in 90 it went to a Speed sensor.

Just to be Clear the NP 203 full time is NOT gear to gear it is a chain driven unit with a differential section. I know most 205's where left in 1 tons or used behind the sm465 manual trans (in the earlier modle years).

Re: What transfer case is in truck?

just to be sure, there is USUALLY a rouond red tag on it covered in ???? that has the number stamped right in it. it should be stamped 208C. the better 241C was a direct swap, but rare in the manual speedo style and generally found only in an 89 Burb or blazer. BUT like i always tell people about these old GM trucks. Ther is nothing i have not seen changed to the wrong thing:-), crossy

Re: What transfer case is in truck?

Yep Crossy... You are right on. I have a 1989 GMC Jimmy with the 350-sm465-NP241c....I just changed it out for a new one and it indeed had a gear speedometer.

WHat I can't find is the bar that bolts to the side of the transfer case and with an automatic would bolt to the bell housing. I really don't know where it bolts to on a SM465 but I was told that the reason why mine cracked is because I did not have that installed.

Re: What transfer case is in truck?

I am personally of the believe that those torque bars break more stuff than they protect. If you want to brace the t-case, it needs to be linked to the frame to take up some of the weight from the adapter.
