Primer of choice - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

All the replacement panels are in and everything is aligned so now we are taking it apart to primer before body filler. What is the primer of choice? Epoxy, eurothane, etc. Brand?

The epoxy primer is some really good stuff, but if you use it make sure you have PLENTY of sand paper on hand. All the epoxy I have ever used loves to load the sand paper up!

... And if you are laying mud OVER the primer the epoxy is a good choice

just a suggestion....you may want to check in the Paint and Body forum for lots of opinions/suggestions.

one thing i learned about primer use something bright don't go black like i did. it became hard to see what i was doing unless i had a light. if i could do it again i would use a brighter color

Hey GT, I have found that the use of a guide coat helps a great deal on either light or dark primer. For black.. you can get a cheap can of white spray paint and lightly mist it over the area. Then you can see high and low spots when you sand and where needs to be sanded more.

Also look in FAQ archive for MartinSR Basics series on autobody. Third option is to talk to the counter guy at your paint store. He can give you real world information on what works in your area and what different price points mean in terms of labor and final quality. I spent $150 on one gallon of etch and one gallon of fill/sanding primer and associated activators. The first is has a yellow tint, second light grey so I can tell high spots.

roger than ben. my problem was working in the garage on areas under the dash i couln't see a thing with out the light.
